You need to know just how bad things are

How long did you drive with the oil light on

Just how tight did the engine get

How bad does it sound now, did your mechanic tell you why it lost oil pressure

If your local to Merseyside Ide take a look at it for you, even help you chuck a second hand engine in if that's what it needs

Might not be as expensive as you think ..........

The engine was totally drained of oil. Took dip stick out and nothing there - just smoking.

Refilled with oil when cool and it starts but if you leave it to run as it warms up a knocking sound starts.

Mechanic advised a pipe taking oil back from air cooler popped off. Must have covered 500 yards with oil light on. Seconds not minutes. Came to a total halt.

Yes a discovery one would do the job but ideally you want to hear it running or you could be buying something just as bad. Depends on how much money you are willing to spend getting it fixed. It won't be worth much selling just now as irrespective of age how much is anyone willing to pay for a car with a knackered engine maybe £1500 tops. I would do a bit more with the existing engine before paying out for another. The fact that it still starts is a good sign, a bottom end rebuild may sort it as it could just be the bearings got starved of oil. Do you have a local independent you can use? If not then I would start there

Have a look in the for sale section there was someone selling a automatic discovery for £750. It has an mot, I don't know what nick its in but maybe you should consider getting something like that. Probably better in a disco for a family car rather than a 90 pick up.
