i have a 110, practicle and fun. I would keep away from td5 as you say you want to modify... this can be a dificult and expensive job unless your a computer wiz.. 200 and 300 tdi are bullet proof...
 
get a poll on the go! then people can vote and youl get a clearer answer. id say 110, you wont look back and think 'oh i wish i had a 90 so i could get up that lane' but you will probably look back after buying a 90 wishing you could fit more in. iv had my 110 2 weeks nearly now and i love it. i came from having a car before and dont find it overly awkward to drive or park.

Having had a 90 and currently got a 110 and Series III then the one I would always get is the 110. I (used to) do a fair amount of climbing and a lot of shooting at the moment and for practicality it can only be the 110.

I haven't done any pay n' plays but went and did some pretty tight green-lanes over the winter and to be honest the only place it falls down is on tight hair-pins, the extra length actually helped out in some situations since I nearly always had one set of wheels with traction.

The 90 we had was a Td5 and did not like it (it was an early model and very unreliable), the 110 has a 300Tdi and so far been the nicest (apart from the 3.0 TDV6 in the D4) I've personally driven.

Will probably be making a few alterations (swapping the van back sides and rear panels between the S3 and 110 to hide the boot).

They're not cheap to say the least - when I bought mine it was intended to be a primary vehicle hence spent a little more than I intended but well worth the investment so far.

a defender is not allways nice .comfort is compromised.i fitted my 90 with the interiour of a rrc and its now warm and quiet.dont be fooled.keep the range and get a 90 or a small car to do running about when it breaks down...
 
For my two penneth go for a 300 Tdi 110 Truck (Utility?), get the loadspace ply lined first if it hasn't been done already or you soon have dings and dongs showing through the side panels. You can then kit the back out for whatever you need, and clean it out after the tip runs with a yard brush. The 300 Tdi is plenty powerful and simple enough too, rather than a TD5 which seems (early ones especially) to be prone to electrical issues which can be hard to sort or need a specialist to do them anyway so it can get expensive. That 110 Td5 on ebay was a bit special though, probably why is was going for good money, it was mounted on FIVE modulars........

I wish I could! But given I already have a daily driver (the BMW) and a motorbike, I think having two 4x4's will be pushing my luck! I love the Rangie, I really do, but it's too good for greenlaning and too thirsty for long distance travel! If it was LPG I'd keep it, but I'm not gonna pay to fit it myself - it'd take me years to recoup the cost at the mileage I do! And I very much doubt they have many LPG stations in the Pyrennes or Morocco...!
 
Set up a search on eBay - specify location, age, etc. and you'll get emailed when new ones are advertised. Keep looking, don't just bid on any old crap, and you'll get one eventually. My 90 (1988 2.5TD) was less than £2K. Admittedly I've spent a fair bit on stuff since then, but very little of that was essential - most of it was what my wife calls "tarts handbag stuff" :D
