Hi gents,

i know this is a sticky issues and i have read quite alot up on it and it seems that no one can give a truely straight answer on this subject.

i have bought myself a 1996 defender 90 300tdi with 140K miles on the clock i have just finished putting new seals throughout the engine which was a long old job.

i now what to do and complete engine oil change and have bought some engine flush along with the oil, however i am in two minds whether to us it or not. having read through some older posts i have seen that people with old engines who have used it have seemed to cause their enginer more harm than good, however my friend who is a mechanic swears by the stuff and has used it on his own landrover and others he has worked on with similar milage on the clock that he says they now run like a "dream" but with no leaks ( must have no oil in them lol ).
ive got two plans really one use it run it up nice and warm with a new filter in then change out the old now cruddy oil and put another new filter in or run the old oil with out the flush in it but with a new filter drop out the old oil and change for new putting another new filter in?

so what is the gerneral feel on this matter ?

or if you want tell me to shut up go away and all that fun stuff ! haha

thanks

from memory oil flush shouldn't be used with hydraulic tappets, run through some cheap diesel oil to clean it and then put in a decent grade of new stuff and a little bit of zinc additive wont harm it either

I would drain most of my oil out, chuck in a gallon of cheap supermarket stuff (any grade really) take it for a drive, get it up to temperature, take it back and dump it all out.

Change the filter and put in the good stuff, this will remove more of the old oil than a standard oil change without risking engine flush.

OR just change your oil with good stuff, and do it again after a few thousand miles then go back to an ordinary 4/5k schedule.

300tdi doesn't have hydraulic tappets - that's why they need adjusted.

In that case it'll be reet :p I've never worked on a 300 so just assumed they were as its an old engine

would you put a new oil filter in with some of the supermarket sweep stuff or just leave the old one on and put the oil in ? doesnt matter either way i have got a britpart filter new to bang in before i put the propper filter in anyway.

when I got my 95 300tdi 90 I dropped the oil and put cheap stuff in with a dose of FX1 surface modifier, ran it for 500 miles then dropped the oil and replaced with good stuff and a new filter.

FX1 seems hard to get in the UK, there was something similar on Halfords shelf with a similar name but I can't remember what it's called, it was a similar named surface modifier (bout £20 a dose).

Not sure where you are in Linc, if NN14 is not too far I have some Fx1, you can have a dose for nowt if you can collect it. (it's in a 50l drum so forget posting it!)

let me try it out and ill get back to you, im sure my misses wont mind standing on it for me ! :lvkiss-106:

it is only and hour n half away from me so i may take you up on that offer ill give you DM if that it is ok ? wont be for a little while yet though trying to sort out some personal stuff that is taking some time !

Yeah no probs, open offer matey, maybe you can time it for when you're nearer/passing

yeh it will probs be the best plan, and thank again, i am going to try the sheap oil and drop first though save myself some diesel money!

I would avoid it to be honest, never done it myself and we dont do it at work and we do **** loads of oil changes
Out of the 100s of motors we see only one customer who has an oil flush additive added before oil change on their fleet of vans, but they do silly miles on the same oil
Change it every 5k and all will be fine
