I have a problem with the rear indicator on my 300TDI 90. It stops working as if a bulb has gone in the rear lamp and blinks fast like a fuse has gone. However it is not the bulb as I have changed this and no joy or a fuse as it sometimes works again. When you take out the lamp and move the wires it sometimes works and then stops again. I figure it is either damp or a corroded earth wire?. So I sprayed the rear of the unit with WD40. This worked for about 3 days and now it is happening again. My question is: Is it dodgy wiring and how do I replace the complete rear indicator unit or don't I have to. I cannot see how the wires are crimped into the back. Any help would be most appreciated.:)
 
when the relay blinks fast it indicates low resisitance. It is usually due to a bulb being out. In your case it sounds more like dodgy wiring or a bad connection. The first thing to check is that the bulb holder connections are free from corrosion. Remove the bulb and scrape the connections with a screwdriver until the metal turns shiny. replace the bulb and see if thats cured it. If it's still the same then trace the wires from the indicator lightback to the big multiplug connection in the rear wheel arch, examining them for any signs of damage as you go. Depending on the lights you have fitted you may have a 2 pin multiplug attatching the bulb holder to the wires. Check this too. If it all looks ok then look at where the wires meet with the big multiplug. Are the connections looking nice and clean and tight or are they looking a nasty green colour. As you don't appear to have any other rear lights playing up, I think it is unlikely that it is the rear earth at fault.
 
I had the same problem a few months back, alot of water and mud can enter where the plug attaches to the bulb holder, I just fitted sealed unit indicators that I got from Paddocks at a couple of quid each.
 
if all else fails try running a new earth straight to the battery from the buld holder. If the problem goes away its a bad earth!
 
As it was 6 years ago he may have solved it! Or, if he works as 'fast' as me he may still be contemplating the fix!
