Evening All,

As I drive along, under accelleration in every gear I can hear a knocking noise from the drive shaft area - sounds like it's coming from right under the gear stick.

While the defender is parked with the hand brake on, I can push the car backwards from the front and I can hear the noise from the same area.

I've been underneath and the front drive shaft does have some play in it, when rocking it back and forth I can hear the knock again.

So pretty sure it's something to do with the d/shaft, but what??

Anyone had any similar experiences?

UJ stand for universal joints? Any idea what sort of price I'm looking at to purchase the parts alone?
 
If it sounds like its coming from the gear box then check rear UJ on front propshaft, and front UJ on rear prop.

So is there a UJ either end of the driveshaft? Found these earlier - but can't find any listed for a 2007 model - will those in the link fit?

I've a good friend who has a set of ramps who's a mechanic, but is this a DIY job if handy enough on the tools? I.e laying under the truck?

You've got a truck as well as a Landy :cool::cool:

Should be pretty straight forward to sort yourself, have a look through Busters guides, they will give you an idea what the crack is;)

Some Tdci (or Puma if you like) models have an issue with the output splines of the gearbox wearing where they enter the extension shaft that mates with the LT230 (a bad design with a "dry" splined joint). If the UJs are OK and you're 100% sure that the noise is coming from that area then that may be worth a look into.

But personally I'd check some other easy to find things first such as worn driveshafts or drive flanges in the rear axle, worn suspension bushes etc.

the following might help (they help me)
Çàï÷àñòè äëÿ Land Rover click on "In English" then access the online parts catalogue. I'm sure other catalogues are available but it's been fine for me. Click on the "Defender 2007 -" on the left and navigate to "B Axles and Suspension" and then to the propshaft. The parts diagram appears, select the part and the pop-up tells you the part number.

Order parts (from a UK supplier, not Russia), wait for postman, fit parts.

Suggest you also invest in a decent 9/16 spanner, 14mm will do it but will slip a bit.

Also buy a "propshaft removal tool", long wineglass shape socket. Makes the whole job easier.

Once it's off, follow buster's guide. Nice big vice, old sockets and circlip pliers.

Where are you? If you're near Sheffield I'll help with your first (of many) UJ replacement.

Matt thanks for the advice and the offer - sadly I'm a bit too far away but appreciate your kind offer!

I purchased a set of four from a place in Liverpool who have been brilliant, although I'm under the impression now that the front UJ's are different from the rear, and all I have is a set of four rear ones.

I've not done the front's yet, are they different sizes to the rear ones?

All UJ's changed. The noise still persists!! Albeit a little quieter, bit stumped. More investigating...
 
Reading a few threads I'm starting to associate a slight rumble around 35-45mph with a worn propshaft.

Looking online I've found one for around £235 + VAT.

Bearing in mind the noise is still slightly similar to that of a worn UJ, and the slightest of rumbles at the above speeds, can anyone tell me is this more than likely the prop or the drive flanges? I'm sure that given the sound from it that the problem can only be one or the other of the prop or drive flanges.

could be pinion gear bearings or a wheel bearing giving the tell tail sign of we giveing up
 
I have simular clonking in 1st 2rd and 3RD gears under drive on my tdci 2008, been told it could be the rear diff but i dont no were to start, someone said its the transmision/ drive train but iam lost.
