decatted my td4 yesterday, turbo seams to spin up earlier and engine feels more responsive, will update on economy if it has made any difference.:)

Won't it fail MOT with no cat?

No it can't.

Only petrols need a cat.

Have a search on here - been discussed at length.

Check the Testers manual too for confirmation, if you wish.

They VOSA even issued a clarification in their regular notices / updates.

Ok just wondered will wait to see if it makes a difference I'm looking for my next mod

Me too - I'm in no particular hurry, but when the exhaust needs replacing - I'm going to get rid of the cat.

Leemx1 -
How did you actually do it?
Put in a short new piece of pipe yourself? -
Or did you find a supplier for it?

I've done my td5! I bought a terrafirma replacement pipe, I found the turbo seemed to spin up maybe 200 rpm earlier and it freed up the top end, as for power? No idea, but it seemed a bit more willing:)

singvogel,
i took the middle section off the vehicle, then with a 1mm cutting disc cut a 8x6 inch rectangle out of the top of the cat/filter. i then chiseled out the insides replaced the piece ofmetal that i cut out and then welded it back up. so it looks exactly the same. You cannot see any difference looking from underneath.

With the cat off and a long bar, you can knock the insides out with out the need to cut into it, did it 2 years ago been through 2 test no prob.
Had to do it as had a turbo let go and the oil blocked the cat up.

I had a new bit of pipe made up for my L series for about £40. There was a spate of Pikey related cat thefts in the area and I thought I'd rather this than have them cut the section out and me having to replace the lot...

Seemed to rev cleaner but I dunno for sure..

diesel cats are worthless, they are a filter and there is no precious metals inside.
people call then cats but actually they are particle filters, its like a ceramic type material inside.

My mate is a mot tester, and he said its a fail with a decat for Diesel,he said he wouldn't even pass mine,i had to put the cat back on.

Sorry pal, but that is complete and utter bolloc*s.

I wouldn't go near any MOT garage that said that - as they have obviously not read the latest/current VOSA Tester's Inspection Manual or the VOSA regular bulletins and updates.

VOSA had so many folks 'phone them about this that they actually issued a memo clarifying the situation.

Only petrol engined vehicles are subjected to a full cat and emmisions test and will fail if there was one fitted at the factory and it is missing.

Diesels only get a smoke test - the so-called 'cat' on a diesel is actually a particulate filter and is a different beast alltogether.

Get the VOSA downloads and read the truth.

That why you are better to remove the inner by what ever way you fine easier and replace, it then looks like it should do and will not get a second glance for mot

He obviously isn't any good at his job!!! I would find a decent mot station! One were they read updates and actually bother to get it right! It's why I pay a little bit more but I know it's done properly
