Under the regs if it was fitted when new got to be there. I want to remove centr box on mine. Was going to cut it off and fit a cherry bomb, but thinking of opening box up and removing the baffels

I just did mine. Look for the post that says look what I made today and theres a pic of my center pipe.

mot tester has to follow what the book says and a diesel does not have a cat so you cant fail it for not having one as it never had one!
and as an ex mot tester myself cant see how you could fail a diesel for having the pf removed. as it does not have full emissions test dont have to check for it being there and as it is not a cat cant fail it.
if anyone did have there diesel failed for not having a cat i would appeal straight away.

A bone of contention with me also. I thought they were PFs. But the item fitted to the P38 diesel does appear to be a Cat not a PF. As a Cat on a diesel will never get hot enough to do anything driving around in built up areas, it is a bit of a stupid accessory. Will have to look into this a bit more.
 
personally i think the problem lies in incorrect use of terminology, it is not a cat it is a dpf if people refered to a diesel particulate filter as a dpf and not as a cat i doubt there would be the confusion on the matter.
when it comes to test time i think problems will happen with diesels not having a dpf due to poor mot testers lacking knowledge of the difference between a cat and a dpf but it is quite clearly written in the manual to only check for a cat if it has a full emissions test which a diesel does not iam sure if vosa wanted a diesel failed for not having a dpf it would state to check for one.
which is why i say if your diesel fails for not having a cat challenge the garage and appeal!

Sorry but that is not so. There is no particle filter made for Land rover P38 diesels, only catalytic convertors. I have just looked through suppliers. They are definatly fitted with a two way cat. Not a particle filter.

I'm in the same boat with my cats - previous owner emptied them and they sound crap.

I was told that this year the mot has changed for lpg and it will be tested on petrol and lpg so you will need working cats.

Decat pipes cost as much as cats though so you might as well replace them.

Emissions test is still done on fuel vehicle is running on when presented for test. If that is LPG that is what it is tested on.

As i said earlier that is open to interpretation. In the checking column it says, "For vehicles that qualify for full emissions test check that a cat is present". A specific instruction for petrol vehicles. In reasons for rejection column it says, "Fail if a cat is not present when one was fitted as standard". That part is not specific to petrol or diesel engines, so could be regarded as covering all vehicles. Maybe it needs to be clarified. One was fitted as standard to all diesel P38s.
 
i still have not got an answer but dus any one know the bore size of a std exhaust on a v8 p38 4.0, i think its 2 and a half ???????
