Got a bit bored over xmas hols,so decided to decat and de silence the rangey.only took an hour and what a difference it makes,fuel economy has gone up by 2 mpg and it definately feels quicker from standstill biggest suprise though was no increase in cabin noise,when i did the same to my td5 the noise was unbearable after a while.
worth doing if you have an hour to spare.
 
I need to do something about the cats on mine.

Any chance of some more details? Is it a petrol? What exactly have you removed and replaced with what and where from?!

got the bits from local exhaust parts supplier,mines a diesel so just used 4 straight couplers,standard clamps and a bit of straight pipe,now i know its all ok i will weld all the joints and remove the clamps,will look a nice job then,cant see the v8s being much different so long as the cats can be cut out and replaced with straight pipe.if you need any help finding the bits work out what you need and pm me i will get you a price from DK exhausts.
 
Quick update,before decat 22/24 mpg around town,after 26/28 and being getting 34 on motorway,this has been checked tank to tank and not relying on the computer,so has definatly been a worth while mod.i wonder has anyone tried removing the rear silencers and running a straight through pipe any issues with noise etc.

Interesting when it comes to MOT though, emissions could be all over the place as well as it being a legal requirement for cats depending on age of car. Most people who de-cat have a second, legal exhaust to re-fit for the test.
 
i did my mot last week and was asked if i had removed the cat,all the tester wanted asked was,was it a worthwhile mod as he wanted to his freelander.ive also done my 2000 disco td5 and never had a problem.iirc there is a certain age when they were fitted but not actually a legal requirement,

mine came with straight thro back end, very loud, sounded great but not at 5 am when settin off to work!
 
the lambdas are infront of the cats, enough room to wel/clamp to or you can move em if you get a new boss and weld that on. alternatively you can knock the innards out og the cats. no need to weld owt then!
 
I did a similar MOD to my rangie 4.2 v8 LSE i got hold of standard 3.9 v8 "Y" Section. took it to a place in Darlington that does repairs to exhausts. They fitted the new section and then extended it so that it coupled up to my stainless exhaust system.
Made no difference to the noise it makes but helped mine run better as i think the cats were knackered and blocking the exhaust.:mil36::mil25:

My p38 4.6 when I brought it into the UK from South Africa did not have Cats fitted.
It failed MOT due to emissions and I was told it was a legal requirement to have them as it was orginially fitted to the vehicle at manufacture.So it now has Cats.
It anyone has decatted their V8 and gets a MOT in that state,I would like to hear about it:confused:

Correct, it is a legal requirement of UK contruction and use regulations to have a cat fitted to any vehicle using an internal combustion engine capable of running off petrol or diesel manufacture in or after 1993. Not only a cat, but an approved cat, many of the cheap after market cats are not approved for use in the UK. It must be of a type approved for that vehicle on it's type approval certificate.
