ok seriously now, i need help. my beloved has developed a rattle an a clankin from beneath that i can't quite pin point. at low revs in a gear too high, so engine labouring, there is a noise coming from below that can only be described as "a trolly load of tea cups and saucers and tea spoons going along a rough surface". ok thats as best as i can describe it. its a metalicy clattery crocery kind of rattle. any ideas before i get slapped on the face with a land rover service and inspection bill?

mine has always done this since i got it...have checked loadsa bits but still never found where its comin from.....

Dose it only rattle on over-run/idle? if so its prob you gearbox getting to the end of its natural life. Mine is a Hreg defender 110 just turned 148.000 miles and its ready for a gearbox.

no it runs sweet on idle, in fact it runs sweet in general. this noise has only just developed, funnily enough just after i hammred the ****e out of it on the alpen cup 4x4 trial. i think its actually comming from the rear diff.

Hi there - just had the same on my 1987 110. It started a year ago and I eventually realised (200 miles from home on a surf trip) that the UJs of the front prop were going. If it was Tbox or Gearbox that would be more of sound of bolts and nuts being thrown into a grinder. If the soun is more deep and clunky, with a hint of high pitch of metal grinding only, then those may be the UJ needle bearings. Mind you it will still do many miles before it gives up (e.g. coming off on a motorway), but you do not want your propshaft to fall off at speed! there are plenty of eBay shops that do new props between £50 / £75 Hope this helps G
