Morning all,
I have just returned from a 5 hour ordeal with my beloved 110 on the back of a recovery truck :(
Just passing Reading eastbound on the M4 at 0630 when the was a bit of a bang from underneath, I started to slow down not sure if I'd hit something and then there were a huge number of bangs and I coasted into the hard shoulder.
The engine was still running OK and the clutch seemed good, but the only gear I had left seemed to be 4th.

If I'm honest I had thought it was getting a little rumbly but don't normally drive that far, but adverse weather etc etc.

Anyway I'm assuming that this sounds like a new gearbox, I have an LT77, I need to track down the serial number.

I had previously thought an R380 "Stumpy" might be a good option but would welcome some advice now that I am forced into action.
In particular I'd like to know who has done the job themselves and how painful it is - assuming a normal home mechanic set up and reasonable competence.

Just what I needed before Christmas :(

sounds like lay shaft bearings have given up it usually destroys input and case another box is the usual fix, the short r380 is a good choice buts going to be dearer and require a few extra parts like diff lock linkage/clutch release mechanism, than a replacement lt77, a g suffix 50a or 56a is best depending on engine 50a is red block ,56a tdi,56a uses same ratio input as disco so gears are very slightly taller

Thanks for the response, current gearbox is/n is 50A0199134E trying to phone around at the mo to see who can quote me a good price for fitting - just looking an Ashcroft and 380s are around double the price! before the extras

My LT77 is currently in the process of being rebuilt at not a huge cost after failing ... apparently due to the wrong oil having been used.
However, I would rather do a rebuild than part chop it for a second hand or recon unit as I know that mine will be perfect when it's finished!
As long as you are handy with spannering, and have somewhere to do it, they are not complicated pieces of kit,

I like the idea of rebuilding it, but I do not want it off the road too long and my garage is full of another project at the moment which means working outside on the driveway - which does not appeal at the mo. Last gearbox I rebuilt was a '67 MG midget back in around 1982 - but its probably like falling off a bike....
Seriously though I'm thinking of putting it into my local garage which is only about 200 yards away and thus isn't a long tow. The question is, what else should I replace at the same time - clutch seems obvious, but what else?
