firstly can i just say hi, ive just bought my step dads 300tdi disco and im hooked on landys now, hes got a td5 disco, my bro's got a 90 and they both share a Lightweight V8 hybrid so it looked like i would get hooked eventually :)

now im looking at getting abit more poke from it, i know its never goin to set records at santa pod but abit more would be nice, im goin to go down the turbo adjustment route eventually once i can afford an intercooler but first i was thinking of de-catting it and getting rid of the first silencer as i read good reports, but was wondering if come mot time i will have to keep swapping the cat back onto it, does it affect the emmisions?, if not could i just gas axe the honeycomb out of the cat?

cheers for any help, james

A mate of mine supplies metals to some fancy exhaust manufacturer and recons their top bods say cat's have zero effect on diesel engines. Another effin con from the green meanies.

The best ways of cost-effectively improving the performance of TDi 300's are De-EGR & De-Cat.

Both of these mods will help your car engine breath better (with a good clean airfilter of course) to deliver better performance.

You'll need an EGR blanking plate such as this:
EGR Blanking Kit - all 300TDIhttp://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/newreply.php?do=newreply&p=780439

and a decat pipe such as this:
http://www.paddockspares.com/pp/DEF...Pipe_-_90_300TDI_without_Cat_(1995-1997).html

Once they are done you can start to feel the potential of the vehicle. Turbo work can improve performance but take great care of Exhaust Gas Temps, otherwise you'll foobar the motor.

Yes, although i'd advise adding an extra mounting point like you'd get on a disco... you'll see what i mean!

Does the 90 non cat front pipe fit a 300 Tdi Disco?

Hi there, yes it does which is why I suggested it. And I have done 4 now without any need of any further supporting brackets - just for your info.

This is the best single thing you will do to your Disco !!!!!

Cheers
Dave

Also worth cleaning out all the air inlet hoses, intercooler and hoses and the plenum chamber. You might be amazed at the amount of ****e you'll find and how much better the engine feels afterwards!!

;)

Cheers for the info, will add this to my parts to order list, allready have silicon turbo hoses waiting to go on, and a new cyclone filter and EGR blank plate, so will get the pipe and do this mod at the same time. Found anougher we problem just before I left for the ship, When I got the truck, I fitted a K&N panel filter and found it made a noticible improvment, but the last few weeks the car seemed to be a we bit hesitent in acceleration, was checking things over as convinced myself it would be rings (natural pessamist) but when I took off the oil filler to check for back pressure I found it was sucking not blowing, checked the air filter and hay presto choked right up, "50K between cleans", yeh right cars only done 20K with it in, the corn fields not that dusty!

I can concur with your comments about the inlet manifold.

I use RedEx of Valvevoline injector / inlet cleaner every 10'000 miles, and always use decent diesel, but i reckon that my inlet manifold was blocked by about 10-15% with oily ****e, (carbons / un burnt fuel I'm guessing?).

I spent the best part of a day cleaning it out in a parafin bath, and the differance afterwards was obvious.

Over the past 12 months or so, I have only done gentle green laning in mine, and my air filter box needs cleaning out every 2 to 4 weeks.

A bad design of the clean air pick up maybe?

this thread is music to my ears gents i'm in the process of ordering the bits to do my disco, DM when you did you inlet manifold what tools did you use to get at the inside of it? cant wait to get it done now just need to get rid of that chuffing viscous fan anorl now.

For the air cleaner box, simply remove the hoses, un-clip the lid, remove the filter element and vac / wash the inside of the air filter box.

Honestly mate, check it monthly, then it's only really a two minute job with the vac.

As for the inlet manifold, the firm that is storing my Chimaera let me use their chemical / parrafin bath.

I originally tried to clean it on my driveway using celliose thinners and an old toothbrush, but it was like trying to platt snot.

So down to the workshop, chuck it in the bath overnight, then spent about 5 hours scrubbing, soaking, scrubbing again, soaking some more, followed by more scrubbing.

I bought a couple of cheap pot washing bristle brushes, wrapped a welding rod around the top and scrubbed away.

There are firms who will properly chemicly clean it for your for around £40. They will do a lot better job than I did using the brush, but of course it might take them 3-4 days to turn the job around. I simply couldn't wait that long, but if you can afford to have it off the road for up to a week, this is the route that I would suggest.

As I have stripped a thread on my cylinder head, when I get around to re-tapping it, I will actually send the inlet manifold off to be proffesionally done.

Other things of note concerning performance and efficiancy of the engine are how well does the exhaust manifold match the exhaust ports on the cylinder head? On mine it is not very well at all, and to anyone with a V8, you can take it as given that they will be miles out. So another job for when the exhaust manifold stud / bolt is re-tapped, will be to strip down the head, get it cleaned up inside and get the ports opened up so that they match the manifold.

I know that this wont increase the performance a great deal, especially in a car so heavy, but over 20'000 miles, (6 months motoring or less for me), I should see a return for my money in fuel consumption alone.

music music music, like the sound of matching the zorst ports cheer's matey time to roll the sleeves up :D

i'm not after the most performace i can get from it i'd just like it to last as long as poss at the mo its only got 80k on the clock so time well spent now should see me right in that department me think's.

As DM says, it's a git of a job to clean properly, time, pot-wash brushes and effort are required ... or a wait and spend!! ;) I'd also do it outside with a throw-away floormat or old carpet. It's surprising how much crap comes out, and where it gets kicked/knocked/sprayed to ...

I also used a small wire brush attached to a 'snake' and a battery drill/driver, helped no end.

hi guys. cheers for all the replys, i forgot to mention that it had already had the EGR removed. the plans for now are to de-cat it and get rid of the first silencer, and give the full induction system a clean out, and some hoses if i can as mine are swelling abit under boost, with a full service. then i will probabaly be happy with that untill i get abit more money to throw at it.

cheers james

ah just seal up the ports with something so there water tight, stick some petrol in and some nuts and bolts, seal the inlet up then dance round the garden shaking it for 10mins, that usually gets the worst out :)
