spotted this 1979 S111 109 outside a scrap yard over the weekend:

Amazingly, it’s worse than it looks. According to the dvla, it was last on the road in 2003 and since the the bulk head has rotted to such an extent that the doors have fallen off.

Even the exhaust down pipe has vanished into ferrous oxide:

I didn’t poke at the chassis, which has heavy surface corrosion but no obvious holes. It probably would have holes if you poked it with a screw driver though...

I’m a sucker for this sort of thing, but I fear it’d be a massive money pit and end up being a Series equivalent of “Trigger’s broom”!!!

Shame: it looks as though it wants to be saved...
 
Mechanically it looks complete, even the engine (which probably has more oil on the outside than in). Being an old mechanical diesel, I wonder if it would start with a fresh battery?

There you go: I’m daydreaming again! Lol
 
You're right John: that's what my head is telling me. My heart however, is a daft romantic! LOL

If it's still there the next time I visit, I'll spend some more time poking the chassis. Like Dag019 says: who needs doors where we're going? ;)

if you have the time - and the moolah for a new chassis and bulkhead (or can fabricate and weld) - why not, I agree it does look like it wants to be saved.

plenty of resto threads on here show what can be done with twenty quids worth of steel and a welder in the hands of a good fabricator.

screens and hard tops can be found cheaply on ebay, distance to go and collect is often the issue, but sooner or later one will come up within a reasonable distance.
 
Loving the heater mod. hanging off the side and there's a spare muffler in the back by the look of it.. :)
The muffler is some kind of straight through design - and the heater mod is definitely going to catch on ;)

The green paint is flaking off: I wonder if the remainder would put up much resistance to a pad of Scotchbrite?

My wife would kill me! I already have at least 5 projects on the go LOL But I as I recall (and after looking at the pictures), the Landy looks pretty straight. I wouldn't mind learning the craft of welding on it - but the general lack of time is probably the biggest hurdle. I'd need to store it and come back to it (and how many times have petrol heads like us say that?)

I'll have a read of some resto threads to see what I'd be letting myself in for ;)
 
I think we should all chip in and send it round to BBs gaff. We could send him parts each week and a new yard brush to paint it.

It could be the LZs community bus. He’s got nowt else to do. :D
 
I've always been told, if there is anything left of the original thing, it can be rebuilt :cool::D
 
Financially, it would be pure folly, it's not like these things are rare. For what it would cost to get it on the road, you could buy a pretty good one.

But then someone else would have built it and there is no fun in that!

If you can weld a few hundred in repair panels for the chassis and bulkhead, and a couple more for a brake/clutch overhaul and a service. You would then be up and running and it becomes a rolling project you can use at the same time.

Yes, you are quite right. What was I thinking. I was not considering the fun factor. I blame the wife, she is always moaning about how much I spend on my landy compared to her. Sorry.

Well yes but I expect she spends very little on the land rover :p

I have the same problem, but always like to point out that a night in the pub every week (which I don't do) would probably cost the same and I would not have an appreciating asset to show for it.
She also regularly eats out with her friends which probably costs the same as I spend on the Land Rover, but somehow that is different because it is not being anti social on your own tucked away in the garage!
