this depends on model and age, only some of the models included the ability to adjust this

They tend to getting brighter as more and more lights come on

Most likely don't have them on there Freelander, not even the HSE models. It's possible to fit them, I'm looking into this at the moment.
The dimmer switch from an MGF looks like a perfect candidate.
