Edit: I've updated the title as the problem has now changed - 3rd post is where it starts.

Hi all,

following on from yesterdays shenanigans, I've discovered a lot of dash bulbs are now 'out'.

Long story short, I was replacing the cigarette lighter socket and I also switched around the bulbs in the hazard switch (it would flash when on, but the illuminated triangle didn't illuminate). Last night when I went to pick up the other half I discovered that a load of dash/console bulbs were now not illuminated;

Front fogs (tell-tale comes on when pressed, switch glyph doesn't light)
EAS Lock (tell-tale comes on when pressed, switch glyph doesn't light)
HEVAC drivers side temp(up/down), large speed selector knob 'Auto', A/C off, recirc - no glyphs but tell-tales working.

Is this a case of all of these bulbs somehow blowing at the same time or is it more likely that in the course of disassembly and reassembly I've knicked an earth wire somewhere that feeds all of these particular bulbs?

I know I really need to take it all apart again to find out but I'd rather go in with a 'good guesstimate' before doing it so I can go get bulbs before ripping it apart if that's the most likely cause.

Any suggestions? :)

Well, seems that bulbs have blown.

However, I've now put it all back together and now the dash won't light up at all. The red srs light comes on but nothing else. The hevac display flashes...car starts but no dash lights or anything. Both the petrol needle and temperature needle pulse slightly in time with the HEVAC display.

Car seems to start fine.. but the dash is completely dead.

Any ideas?

It gets worse. When I engaged the hazards, the hevac display would flash in time with the indicators.

Edit: I can't find any obviously damaged wires or anything - at a bit of a loss here!

You have lost a ground somewhere, suggest you go through it again and find out where.

That's what I thought so I've been through it all but I can't see anything that has been snagged or cut or anything like that at all. I've stripped it all back out again (radio, hevac, console) and there's nothing that I can see.

There was a chocolate block connector with an earth (to chassis) and a red cable from the radio loom but they weren't connected to each other. I may have had them touching at some point mistakingly but apart from that, nothing else is out of place at all.

Could there be a fuse somewhere that is the culprit?

Have a look i don't have my crystal ball to hand. :D:D

All sorted - was a fuse under the drivers seat - Fuse 1 (10 amp)

Still... haven't sorted the bulbs issue - will need to order up quite a few replacements it seems, just need to figure out which ones etc.

Always specify which fuse you replaced in case others search this thread.

BUT, if a fuse caused all those issues, you probably still have an earth broken somewhere . . . .

Pete

Nah, it will have been from me shorting out 2 connectors that weren't supposed to be connected!

Just trying to find the fuse number to update the thread - hadn't forgotten :)

Updated!

I recently change some of mine. Tested them all with a 9V battery before putting everything back together, then l low and behold, cruise control and hazard bulbs didn't work. Tooke it all out and cleaned the contacts, fine. Back together again. Then.........one of the three bulbs lighting the speedo and rev counter didn't work. A quick flick of my finger on the front cover and on it came. They have a mind of their own.

It wouldn't bother me so much if there wasn't all the faff of having to take the centre console out to get at the damn switches to replace them!

No gain without pain as they say. I recently changed the headlamp bulbs in mine. Had them in the garage for three weeks and the buggers never fitted themslves. In the end i had to do it. :D:D
