hi i have a 300 tdi 95 n reg with one of the most annoying front end rattles that i just do not seem able to find. the noise sounds like brake pads rattling but the pads aint loose and the noise persists even when i have my foot on the brake pedal. the calipers also are tight so it aint that.
i've had the car on the ramp and can't find any play on any of the axle mounts, tie bars, steering dampers, track rod ends etc.
i am really stumped with this one and i'm in danger of wearing my fingers out from scratching my head so much.
anyone got any other ideas on this one?

it's ok my end caps have been pop riveted together! previous owner's dad was a proper artist of the end it or mend it persuasion

If you have an ES it has got these ridiculous shiny caps on the wheel nuts these rattle like an old mans teeth on a marathon and are daft, just fiddle with one (dont get caught ) and you will see it.gaurenteed.:)

Have you picked up a stone? I had one for months in an Army rover. I couldnt find the Ba**&& for ages, got it on the ramps and hit the chassis all over the place out of frustration and found a bloddy stone inside!!!

hi its the 's' model with the shiny wheel nut things i'll have a good fiddle with it in the morning as long as i dont get caught!!!!
i'll let you know the results later could be possible as it does sound metallic like!

HA!!!! gottit bloody stupid shiny wheelnut was the culprit after all. whilst changing front springs and a track rod end thingy for the anual re-introduction to religion (mot test to the un-enlightened!) we came across a wheel nut with a dent in the shiny bit and replaced it as a matter of course.... only problem now is people think i'm mad driving everywhere with me head out the window listening to see if the noise has come back!!!
seemed perfectly sensible to me like (well it did till i got a fly in my bloody eye like!)
