Hi,

Had a look around here to see if I can find anyone who's having the same issues. Can find several similars but none the same so ANY help greatly appreciated, this truck is getting on the last of my nerves!

To cut a long story short, its only done 75k for the record.

Got a nice TD5 auto GS 2001 plate, went OK, apart from bubbles shooting up from the expansion tank. Took it to local LR dealer, reckons HG failure.

No problem I thought, got the parts, got the head skimmed, pressure tested and all that jazz, 2 handy BMW mechanics to do the job, luvley jubbly. All was well. Bubbles went away.

Couple months later noticed that the Rad was a little damp and pink in one corner, and was loosing a bit of water, every 500 or so miles. As its not used much I put it down to a bit more water used for a but after such a big job. Changed rad, top hose, expansion cap, bled thru etc.

Now there is still a little water seeping out of the over flow and still loosing water here and there. Prob around a litre every 500 miles. And I can't see where its going.

Oil is a good colour, no diesel or water in it, coolant is now a nice colour and flowing nicely thru the return back to the expansion tank.

Its NOT overheating, temp guage stays dead centre, tho the electric fan is running. Heaters run OK. She pulls and drives well.

Any ideas out there anyone?! Any help greatfully recieved! Thanks :)

was the head heated up before it was tested? it sounds to me like it could have a crack in it. Try driving it hard for a couple of mins and then stop and see if the coolant hoses are pressurised.

Thanks for that.

Driven like it was stolen down the road n back, up to temp and yeah, coolant hoses presurised. Pressure in expansion tank.

Dunno if that's right or wrong.

When running the small return pipe off the top of the rad has a steady flow back into the reservior.

If they are pressurised as in getting towards rock hard then it's highly likely that you have a head is cracked.

If the hoses can still be squished so the opposing sides touch then it's normal.

Thanks for the prescise tip :) just done it again.

Um, yeah, I can sqeeze the hose so the sides touch.

When I do I can hear liquid moving in the expansion tank

Two possibilitys. 1) Water pump leaking in which case the leaking water will lie on the engine mud shield. 2) crack in the top of the rad. I had a R/Rover which had a crack in the "plastic" top of the rad which was invisible to the naked eye.

Right! We still have a problem here somewhere.

It now sometimes dumps its water when static, but sometimes doesnt, and sometimes its only a small amount and sometimes its not.

I found the fuel cooler return hose had a split in it.

I replaced that, bled through etc etc. All good I thought. No.

Hoses on a run (all of them not just the top) are ROCK hard but hot, none cooler so it seems like water flow occuring, steady stream of water from the radiator return to coolant tank.

Hellish pressure in the tank itself, and when off after being warm it sounds like a little hiss coming from the cap, I replaced the cap AGAIN and still does it?

I assume any coolant i'm loosing is amounting from steam seaping from the coolant cap?

Really starting to 'P' me off to be honest. I'm starting to wish I kept the 300 previous!

that "hiss" when you remove the cap is normal and required... there must be 1.4 bar there cos that's the pressure where the system works well... "The expansion tank is fitted with a sealed pressure cap. The cap contains a pressure relief valve which opens to allow excessive pressure and coolant to vent through the overflow pipe. The relief valve is open at a pressure of 1.4 bar (20 lbf.in 2 ) and above."

so if the coolant goes out there it means that it's an overpressure in the system ... or you loose coolant somwhere else

So thats right and doing the job its meant to....

So why would it be over pressurising? Or is it me being over cautious about the hard hoses?

I've shelled out loads on this with regards to replacment bits, head, HG, rad etc etc etc the list goes on!

I don't wanna have to do it all again! Esp as its only done 74K

Not to sure what they are like on a TD5 but i have just had to change the expansion bottle on the wifes V6 freelander as it cracked/crazed around the cap, and that had the same symtoms of mysterious water loss, but not overheating. Guess it would have done though if i hadnt kept an eye on it.

If it only loses water when static and only in certain positions I'd suspect water pump, I've had them intermittently leak like that before. Park a bit further back!
