Hi All
I'm getting grinding in fifth gear on my manual 04 Landmark D2 between 50 - 70. At first I thought "wheel balance" but I've had it done several times and it makes no difference. I also thought wheel bearing but it doesn't occur in fourth or when coasting. I can ease it by subtle balancing of the throttle but when going up hill and applying gas and the noise increases again likewise down hill with or without gas. It's been going on for two years.
I was advised wrongly by a local gearbox specialist that it was the transfer box and they rebuilt it, they said the two main bearings were destoyed, but still the same so now thinking "a bearing on fifth gear?" don't really want to take it back to the people who did the TB as it was an expensive diagnosis and I only have their word it there was a TB problem as it was just the same when I got it back over a £1000 worse off. The Transfer box was an Ashroft Recon Unit fitted when I had a diff lock added in 2006, as late 04's didn't have the access plate for the lever the box had to be swapped.
Has anyone had this problem or can point me in the right direction?
I have towed a reasonably heavy trailers 9at about 1.5 tonnes) for long distances if this makes a difference one I later found had binding brakes.
