Quick question to all you experts. I am about to trade a Freelander for a D2. I have not seen the 'new' car I have been offered yet as it is a long way away. It is on an X plate. Will it have the capability of adding the diff lock or will it have a box that didn't have the links in at all. It's got fsh on 83,000 miles. Anything else I need to know. I do need a diff lock option. Thanks in advance.
 
The X reg means it's early '99 so if it's on the original transfer box it certainly has the CDL internals and needs only the linkage unless it's some top spec which has the linkage too from factory.
 
As @sierrafery has said, if it's an original early T-box it'll have the internals. The D2 CDL linkage was largely a cable operated set up, unlike the D1 which used a set of levers. The usual way to check is to get under and look (or rather feel) for the operating spigot on the top of the T-box, towards the front of the box above the front prop shaft outlet. If the Hi/Lo ratio lever can be moved to the left then the CDL operating kit is probably installed.
As to whether you need a CDL, that's debateable, and largely up to you and what you'll be using the Disco for. The D2 is fitted with an electronic traction control system which many users say is just as good as the mechanical CDL.
D2 CDL operating kits are still available and run out at something like £350, new.

Mate had a D2 with CDL and TC .. awesome kit, went everywhere with very little drama, particularly good on wet grass!!

If you dont have a CDL and break a diff or a shaft ...no matter how good the traction control is you wont move :)

Yeah, UJ collapsed once and I had to disconnect the affected prop. Without CDL I couldn't have driven it home.
