hello all my d2 pickup build is at the stage where the battery needs relocated as the arches are being heavily modified. the plan is to locate the battery behind the seats in its own little box. I've downloaded the various IVA pdf's and so far I can't see a problem after all the battery sits under the seat on defenders.
however I was thinking they could fail it because of fumes from the battery venting maybe ?

anyone have any thoughts in this thanks
 
transit batteries are under the drivers seat.....they have a little vent pipe from the battery through the floor to outside
 
There are at least four things to consider when relocating a battery, the first three are safety issues and the fourth is an electrical one:-
  1. Security of the battery, it must be securely fastened down. These days battery security is an MoT issue.
  2. Prevention of spillage of acid. The housing should be treated on the inside to reduce as much as possible the corrosive effects of any possible spillage of the acid.
  3. Venting of potentially explosive gasses. Lead/acid batteries produce hydrogen gas when they're being charged and steps must be taken to prevent the gas building up inside the enclosure.
  4. Relocating the battery will inevitably require an extended power feed to the existing electrical system at the front of the vehicle. The voltage drop along this extended length of cable will probably require the use of a heavier gauge of cable compared with what's already installed.
 
Just curious. But what have you done to the vehicle that it requires an IVA?

that is most of what's happening to the chassis also outriggers and spreader plates are being added for the roll cage hopefully they will be welded on this weekend. hopefully

true can't see it being a problem if I can't find a battery with a vent pipe I can just house it in a sealed plastic box with a vent pipe of its all
 
Older car batteries had individual caps on each cell so they were able to vent through them. Modern "sealed for life" batteries will have a vent on them usually somewhere at the top of one or more sides.
If you ever buy a new battery the safety instruction sheet will tell you to remove the little transit bung before you install it.
You'd best work on having to vent the enclosure.
