Hi guys first post here
I was driving my freelander 2000 reg this morning when it suddenly died, I tried to restart it, it’s ticking but won’t turn over Fuel was low I was on my way to fill it after the problem occurred I walked to the petrol station and topped up the fuel so I know it’s not that all lights on the dash and radio are working fine they go out after a few seconds as normal. Anyone have any idea what’s wrong or had this happen in the past to them and if so what was the issue?
 
Hi Kkiv welcome aboard! It's customary to introduce yourself on the forum.

I would start looking at the starter motor. Take a fly lead from the +ve side of the battery and touch it to the starter terminal (quite difficult to get at so be careful with the live lead) If nothing happens, the starter is a Nippondenso unit which has problems with the copper contacts at a certain age. Replacement kits readily available on the bay of sharks. If it fires up with a lead you will need to look at the ignition lock which has problems with contacts. All is available by searching on 'ere. I’ve had my dad come and have a look and He’s sure it’s the fuel pump that’s given up on it. So I’m going to wait for the RAC to tow my to my dads so he can have a proper look.

The engine would still crank over if the fuel pump has died.
 
Hi guys still having no luck with this, we’ve changed the fuel pump and check the pressure and also changed the crankshaft sensor, checked all fuses and relays and it’s still not turning over anyone have any other ideas?
 
I'm pretty sure none of those things you've touched would stop it turning over.

It is an electrical fault if its not turning over.

On the dash is an LED that blinks when you lock the car - it goes out when you unlock it. When you turn the key does it come on solid (not blinking)? That would indicate that the car is imobilised. Its the first thing to check - but probably not the problem as you can hear 'ticking' which is probably the starter not working properly.

Try the check above to see if the starter will work when manually applied.

Could just be a knackered battery of course.
 
Did you even read what was suggested before changing all those parts?:oops:

All that you've done was a waste of time and money, as nothing you've changed will stop it cranking over.

If the starter is clicking, then the problem is the contactor in the starter solenoid, which are available and very cheap.

Don't mess with the anything on the engine if it's not cranking, as you'll not fix it and more likely to create additional faults.

It would be helpful to know what engine is fitted too, as some faults are engine specific.

If it just cut out while driving and then wouldn't turn over then maybe ignition switch has failed.
If the dash lights up then could be the contact in ignition switch that operates the starter.
