I'd be prepared to pay this much for a proper rack:

Theres some pretty similar on fleabay in i think for about 350 if you search safari/expedition etc..

You mean the LR Expedition rack? STC50433? They're no longer available, and I can buy one for £240 brand new. Lot more to the SD rack than the LR rack

What's makes the SD ones worth £450+ more?

You'll have to ask SD that! There is a lot more to it though, there's twice as much metal in it than the LR one, not to mention the extra strengthening bits and all the fittings for lights and so on

It's still for sale, but I'm not pushing it as I know it'll be difficult to replace in the future if necessary...

They bolt directly to the roof not clamped to the roof rails
They follow the contours of the Freelander roof so look good & aren't as draggy as the ones that clamp to the rails
There are 4 spotlight mounting points at the front & a work light mounting point at the rear
They are made from good quality 1" tubing
Useable load area is almost the same size as the roof
Optional bib spoiler reduces wind noise to a minimum
Optional Phenolic ply deck is slip resistant & strong enough to stand on
The top rail which runs right around the rack makes it easy to lash things anywhere on the rack

But I suspect what makes these racks so pricey & popular is the Safety Devices name & the fact that they were fitted to the G4 Freelanders & originally the Camel Trophy Freelanders ( Slightly different design )

Having said that if anyone wants mine for £2,000 then I can live without it ;)

Thanks for that. They look good and I'd be quite excited about one I I had a 5 door. I like your set up aswell. Do many expeditions?

Looking at it now they do look worth the money.
I'd be happy to pay £500-£750 for a 3dr version if the entire roof was usable space.

SES88, how long do I have to save up for one??!

Problem with the 3dr is you only have 1 set of mounts on the top of the roof, nothing at the back where the hardtop is. I can easy enough make a rack that sits on the standard 3dr roof bars and that uses the 2 seams above the windscreen under the plastic caps. I doubt a rack that just mounted on the points in the middle of the car and the seams at the front would be strong enough to support a decent weight, anything on the back could cause the rack to pull and twist when driving at speed.

Can have as long as you like, other projects that I can get done first while working out the best way forward for roof racks
