What are peoples views out of curiosity, do you reckon you get better mpg sitting at 70 on dual carriageway with cruise control on or off or doesn't make any difference??

Cruise control?????????? what the fukc is cruise control. The best 'cruise control' is your right foot and an alert brain.

my view is that it improves mpg but not directly.. with cruise switched on I tend to set it at under 70mph and sit there chilling, keeping alert and aware but feeling relaxed and so maintaining a steady speed.. with it off I tend to be more concious of my speed and so tend to push a little harder potentially using more of the lanes and driving a little faster and less frugally

On long flat roads, cruise control will improve fuel consumption as it can maintain a constant speed better than most drivers, however on hilly or bendy roads the cruise control will often accelerate harder than a human driver would to maintain speed consequentially making fuel consumption worse.

completely dpeendant on the roads as mentioned above.

my findings on a 500 mile round trip from knutsford to glasgow (CC on the way, no CC on the way back)

on the way, with the cruise control i noticed that on downhill sections it would brake gradually to keep speed and have to work harder on uphill sections to stick to the pre-set speed.

on the way back, you can let the car do its own thing on the downhill sections and use no fuel at all (or burn some and build up a bit more momentum!!)

overall, i got an extra 9mpg on the return journey by not using the CC.

not in a landy - but a vauxhall signum but i cant see the theory being different between vehicles.

Ok great stuff thanks alot, i don't use it that much.

I'll keep to using it on flatish roads then!

Clarkson of Top Gear took a DB9 to Italy and he said that mpg was better without cruise control. He was quite happy to let the car slow down a bit on a motorway incline for few minutes or so. Where as with the CC engaged it would open the throttel to maintain the preset speed.
So as with all the posts above, the answer is NO..

I have to agree
the cruise control is quite crude on a d2 I can get 16/17mpg (lpg) without using cc and it goes down to 13mpg using cruise.
coming back from devon on friday I came off cruise to let someone pass and then hit resume and pulled out to overtake. I had cruise set at 65 and my speed had dropped to 60 it dropped 2 gears and went to 4500 rpm to get that 5mph back. great noise but you pay for it at the pump
