They did offer 7.50 tyres on 90 i think they a roughly same size as 265/70 r16.
But is all old fashion to modern brakes i suppose.
My drums are all new, cylinders shoes springs etc so should be ok.
Every thing is free.
The "egg" rear drum didnt help.

I have now replaced the rear drums and got it all adjusted up and brakes are alot better.

So on wards now with the transfer box replacement again:( and new rear prop:).

I have fully rebuilt my 90 brakes with new master cylinder, new calipers, pipies, flexis, shoes and wheel cylinders and 250 miles later, despite being correctly adjusted, their performance is still lack lustre. I'm planning on fitting a disco axle with discs. I care not for originality if the brakes don't stop!

Something is amiss then, as I did the same on all my brakes - discs at the front and drums at the rear - and after the discs had bedded in etc the brakes are very good.

I do think land rovers have good spec brakes, when set up properly.

Are you pads retracing to much at the front? And are the rear drums set up?

I found with mine I needed to take the pads out then fit an old worn set of pads and pump the pedal, then retract the calipers just enough to get the new pads back in - this over came the ‘springyness’ In the new calipers piston seals that were retracting the pads to far from the disc making for poor performance.

I also found after a couple of hundred miles I had to readjust the rear drums to make them excellent again.

Are the rear drums setup okay? It’s quite easy to get springs the wrong way round etc

Ive fitted ebc utramax or whatever they are called they seem a improvement over what i had before.
I know brake compounds make a huge diffrence to brake performance from my track car.
Fitted some crap pads to my transit once and you could not stop the thing it was terrible. Now i always use ford pads on it and it stops!

Have you checked the servo?
With engine stopped pump it until you get a hard pedal.
Then, gently keeping your foot on the brake, start the engine and the pedal should rise.
If it doesn't, there is a clue to your problem, as it could be something as simple as the 'couple of quid' non-return air valve. ;)

Ill check that when i have it back together again got transfer box out at mo:rolleyes:
But with a bit of luck ill have it back together later today.
servo was new but worth checking thanks!

Interesting comments @flat. Yes, the shoes are fitted correctly, with springs installed as they should be as well as leading edge in the correct place. I have Mintex pads front and same for shoes in the rear. Not the best friction material, but not bad either.

If I pump the pedal a few times, the braking does not really improve, so surely that rules out adjustment?

I'm now wondering about the new front calipers. They are Allmakes and I am not convinced of their quality. Master cylinder and slaves were Delphi though.

other option is are the calipers the right way round (they are sided) with the bleed nipple at the top? its easy to get the upsode down and they will 'sort of' bleed but give crappy performance

Yes, mine are correct with nipple at top. Btw, bleeding was a right side in my case, but got there in the end.

Sorry Davemack, didn't mean to hijack your thread!

No worries mines back on axle stands still waiting for rear prop.
had one made as v8 lt85 90 has oddball rear prop.

Then i can get on with bedding in my brakes again

I'm not sure of length but land rover list different prop for early v8 90?
prices ranging from 400 to 750 ish if i remember correctly.

Im no expert but its different up to CA254406 chassis number.
Im just going on what paddocks told me.
mine starts with AA.
if id known id just bought normal one crap!
http://www.lrseries.com/shop/product/listing/35845/FRC8385-REAR-PROPSHAFT-90-V8.html
theres 3, 1 for lt95 with incorporated transfer box,and 2 with lt230,lt85 uses lt230 like lt77 and r380,lt230 fits slightly further forward when v8 or 300tdi are fitted hence the bulge in the tunnel near hand brake lever ,thats not there with all the other pre 300tdi 4 cylinder engines

So should i send it back and buy the cheaper "normal" one.
I see its different again for later v8's same as td5?
Im a bit confused so a normal 300tdi would of fitted fine?
Ill be sending it back if thats the case

td5 is the same as 300tdi and v8 ,but to be certain you want a few measurements
