As a return to the world of Land Rover I bought a '98 XEDI - maybe not the brightest move, but it was local, cheap mot'd and, in all fairness, drives well for what it is. The brakes have always been a bit spongy and the handbrake crap.

I put this down to the adjusters being buggered - changing them sorted the handbrake out, but the spongyness remained. 'So somewhere there's air in the system' I thought - I'll bleed them. Still crap. Then the other day someone pulled out close enough for me to hit them in a hurry - pulled to the left a bit and stopped ok. BUT the fabled '3 Amigos' came on. And are still on. I've looked at loads of threads on the net and still don't know a) why they came on, or b) how to switch them off/mend the damn thing.

TC and HD go out if I pull the 7A ABS fuse, come back on when it's replaced. ABS light stays on even with the under-bonnet fuse pulled.

Some info seems to suggest ' fix it- lights go out' other info 'fix it - get it reset at a dealer'

I'm confused

And getting ****ed off too!

Can anyone shed some light? Preferably in words of one syllable that don't include 'match, yard or scrap'

Need to get codes read so you can tell what's wrong with it

Or use a parts dart and start replacing parts until the lights go out :)

diagnostic check first thing to find the cause=about 25/30 quid,
my landy did the same when i braked hard, check said nearside
front sensor needs replacing,so i bought the whole hub + sensor
for 42 quid might be s**te but its going on.
regards stan.

Did you bleed the brakes in the correct order?
front passenger, front driver, rear passenger, rear driver
that's on a right hand drive Freelander 1

edit: forgot to say I was thinking about the sponginess only.

it wouldnt make any difference , codes need reading ,modulators can fail and not effect pedal but they can fail and effect pedal , though it could be just as easily a failed sensor and poor slave cylinder, pipe or master etc etc

Nice to have yer back. ;)

Also check any rubber flex brake pipes,if they go soft, they can expand and cause a spongy feeling,as the pressure is not being transferred to the brakes adequately.

Thanks for the responses! First order is to get the brakes actually working properly - lights will have to wait. Interesting to hear that Stan's did the same thing after heavy braking - hurry up and fit the new hub so we can see if it cures it!

I'll try and bleed the again this weekend. The back end is clean and adjusted properly, so thats not the issue

Had a 98 FL a few years ago and the brakes were truly awful. Bought an 04 facelifted K series and the brakes are brilliant.
Did LR improve the brakes when they did the face lift?

hi dave o,dont hold your breath mate it is my discovery that
needs sensor doing,im driving about in a freelander for a few
months, disco is sorned & in my garage,i really dont know which
to keep, come on you proper landy owners,v8 disco 2 or a gay-
lander td4 as you call them.:p. i reckon sales of said freelander
must have helped keep land rover solvent.?.
