i've decided to take a few weekend to sort out some issues with the P38. having done the hub, and the front propshaft UJ's i have a pair of front discs and pads awaiting pick up from DPD collection point (they astrted to look a little lipped at the hub change...

the next on the list is the front cover gasket, which is weeping.. so its sump down, front cover off, and as usual.. while i'm in there, might as well take care of the timing chain and sprockets .

however..... there's always a however.. i dont have a pully holding tool. i hate to be a borrower, but if anyone has one they can lend out i would appreciate it.. i dont to want to drop £100 for a tool, that will *hopefully* be a one time use.

i'd also appreciate any items for the order list.

front cover gasket
crank oil seal
water pump gasket
timing chain
sprockets
sump gasket
the Saint V8 oil pickup O ring
serpentine belt
1 bag of luck

Contact @Grrrrrr ,He may have one to lend out....if asked nicely....

I see you have already listed the pick up O ring - yeah, er....don't forget that one!

To be able to undo - & do up - the front pulley bolt on my RRC (3.5 auto) I removed the cover plate on the lower front of the gearbox bellhousing & used a 'V' shaped piece of steel between the ring gear & the lower flat part of the bellhousing to lock the engine.
Done it a few times & not had a problem.

where do you lock it into ? does it take someone to hold it in place.. i'll be doing it on my own.. unless another LZ fancies pitching in to help with wise cracks and insults ?

i'll have to have someone fabricate something if that is the way to go

There have been those who have used a a bit of 4x4" wood under the bigend, and braced against the floor to stop the engine rotating while you hang of the crank bolt.

It can be braced against a chassis leg if no-one about.

Look at the bottom of your pic. The bottom of the bellhousing under the starter ring gear is flat & at each end of the flat part the gap between gear & housing is wider. Short piece of 'V' section (or right angle) steel slid in in the wide part on the appropriate side (to undo put it in on the left of your pic) & then turn the crank bolt to undo it.
The ring gear will turn & jam the 'V' against the flat bit.
No need to have anyone to hold it & I haven't broken anything - yet!

I've got a crank seal and a rubber sump gasket. I guess it's a Thor. I undid the front pulley with my 18v Makita impact wrench btw .
