Hi guys I hope someone could shed some light. I'm on holiday in Exmouth Devon. My disco td5 has been fine. Went to the shop. Went round a corner and it cut out. Fuel was low so walked for fuel and primed it a few times. But still no luck.

Hi, how much fuel did you put in, think they need quite alot to prime up if it did run out of fuel

Might not be enough, did a quick search and someone mentioned 10 litres,
How did you purge it?

Agh ok. I put ignition on. Pump throttle 5 times. Engine light flashed on and off which means it's purging and then it goes off.

Umm, I would expect that the fuel light would illuminate when the tank level drops to 9 litres… just like my D1 does and which gives me at least 30 miles to go and find petrol, waiting for the light is something I do most times.

So, if the D2 tank is similar… then adding the extra 5 litres to the tank extinguished the light there must at least 4 litres in the tank therefore the engine should run.

As for why diesel’s don’t start :(

I'm going to try and jump it after. Do you think the fuel filter might be blocked? How do I go about checking fuel pressure? I also saw about oil in the harness but unsure wher that would be.

Check the harness by removing the red plug on the ecu which is located behind the battery. Look at the pins on the plug to see if it's covered in oil. Not sure how to check fuel pressure.

From the TD5 manual, the proper procedure..............

Diesel engine vehicles
After running the fuel tank dry, refuel the tank
with at least 1 gallon (4.5 litres) of diesel fuel,
then carry out the following procedure:
1. Turn off the starter switch and wait for 15
seconds.
2. Turn the starter key to position ‘II’ and wait
for 30 seconds.
3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 six times.
4. After the final 30 second period, fully
depress the accelerator pedal.
5. Keeping the pedal depressed, start
cranking the engine.
6. Continue cranking the engine and as soon
as the engine is firing smoothly, ease the
accelerator pedal back to approximately
halfway through its travel, and release the
starter key. The engine should now be
running.
7. If the engine fails to start, repeat the
process.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
The engine must NOT be cranked for more
than 20 seconds in any one period.
If the above procedure is carried out on a
vehicle that has NOT run out of fuel, it will
result in the engine flooding with fuel
and failing to start.

Did another search and found this. This is how I bled the fuel on mine when I put the engine back in on mine. Although I put in a Jerry can worth of fuel.
Crank sensor could be at fault maybe?

To check the fuel pressure (which should be 4bar) screw a presure guage in where the fuel temp sender goes on the FPR.

As it says in the thing about how to purge the fuel system, if you weren't out of fuel to begin with then what you have done could have flooded it, making the whole situation worse. :(:(:(

Thank you I did it how you put up here took a few bleeding sessions but all done I have a few questions about a few things

What is that on the passenger side

Also that expansion tank has two parts one I presume is power steering what's the other side for with the cap off and what's the box next to it with the four pipes coming off it.

Unit on passenger side is the ACE system. Secondary aspect of the tank is for ACE Fluid.
The "Box" is the heart and soul of the ABS braking system
:)

So it that black box with the ACE system that's under the passenger seat under neath? Also with the tank being empty would that throw up ABS, hill decent and TC light up on the dash?

I take it you haven't had the Disco for very long? If the ACE reservoir is empty and the cap was missing I would suspect that ACE has been disabled. Someone that knows ACE will no doubt be along shortly - mine was disabled and is now gone totally.:D
The 3 amigos can have a number of possible reasons. :(

No not long at all. The cap is still on. How do you know if it's been disabled?

No idea,,,as said, I never had ACE.
Try a search while waiting for someone more knowledgable to wander past.
