Hi All.#

About 5/6 months ago I had a timing kit replacement and crank seal done on my 1995 300tdi 90. By my local independent land rover specialist.#

All was well for a week, untill I noticed a patch of oil on the drive. Spoke to the garage who replaced or refitted the crank seal for me free of charge. It didn't leak for a few months after that, other than the odd drop.#

I left the wading plug in for approx 1000 miles thinking all would be okay (wrong I know) to then remove it the weekend to find oil pouring out the wading plug hole. About half an egg cup full. But it's continuing to leak far more than normal.

Where do I stand with the garage? Have I got to pay for replacement now and possibly a new belt? Before they touched the timing belt it was leak free up front.#

Thankyou all. I wanted to ask as I'm really unsure, and whether there is any sort of warranty.
 
If you have got black oil in your bell housing that will probably be the rear crank seal. From what you are saying 'leak free up front' and 'timing belt change it sound like you are talking about the front crank seal? If it was the front crank seal you had replaced by the garage then I don't think you can hold them responsible for a rear seal failure.
 
Aha, just re-read and I think you are talking about timing case wading plug - disregard previous waffle. Think you need to get the front cover off and have a look as it could be the cam seal too, if belt has oil contamination on it replace it

What im trying to ask is should I take it back to the garage and expect a new one to be fitted again properly without me having to foot the bill.

If I was the garage and it was the crankseal then I tell you you need a new seal and timing belt drive sprocket as thats what the seal runs on....and they'd have to be genuine :)

If it wasn't leaking to start with why did you get it changed? sleeping dogs :)

I had them change it because it makes sense to fit a new seal while all the timing gear is out
 
I suspect this comes down to quality of parts used. I bet the parts weren't genuine and possibly some blue box stuff.

I don't know where you stand legally, but I would go and have another word with them and maybe ask them who's parts they fitted. I am sure the garage did the job right but the quality of parts can be very suspect...
 
Did you get 12 months warranty with the work done, if you did and a part they fitted is leaking you are covered.

Do garages give a 12 month warranty on work done? Seems a little far fetched to me. But if they do then you are onto a winner!
 
So your warranty's would cover this issue?

Where do you draw the line though. Without starting a different thread on this subject, there must be a limit as to what you would and wouldn't cover?

But either way, I must applaud both of you as this is a service over and above anything I have experienced where I live.

If we fitted the seal and its still leaking or there is still a leak from that area we would pull it apart and investigate, if its the seal we fitted it would be changed FOC.

We have just replaced a clutch under warranty on a citroen due to a very slight judder when pulling away, we gave him a FOC loan car.

We had the fly wheel skimmed which the customer agreed to pay for all is good now, a happy customer who will return and has already recommended us to friends and family.

I totally agree, but maybe I am getting old but it seems that a lot of companies just don't give 2 ****s about customers. You see this every day with the lack of interest in talking to potential customers, general rudeness and abruptness and poor pre and post sales service.

There is a breakers yard not too far from me and if you speak to the old bloke in there he has all the time you need to answer questions and sort stuff out. His son (not sure, but he's certainly related) just can't be arsed and if I have to deal with that little scrotum I usually just go elsewhere. The little scrote is rude, dissinterested, everything is too much trouble and also rude to the old man too! I don't understand how people like that can run a company. Maybe they are just bought into the business as they are related by blood or marriage, but it seems such a shame.

But this is going into a totally different area, far removed from the OP. However, I really do commend you on your customer service (and I bet you don't fit cheap blue box parts either!)
