Hi all,

Just wondering how much people have paid to get their chassis galvanised? There are plenty of new ones about to buy but I am interested in how much the actual process costs, roughly.

Thanks!
Cassie

I think its on weight of zinc used so they weigh chassis before and after and charge you the difference, plus any work they had to do so they could galv it.

Plus chassis has to be clean ie no paint/sealer & all inner channels clear.

yes it’s charged by weight. I would just purchase a new galv chassis & not have any hassles.

Im sure I read somewhere the galv boys get very upset if any crap from inside the old chassis messes up their zinc tank.

Not been for a while but the place near me changes about £7+vat per kilo to galv things. They just weigh it when when you arrive and change accordingly, there is a minimum charge of 100kg so you need a fair amount before it is worth going down there. But that is only for the final galvaniseing process. You need to have cleaned, shotblasted, acid dipped etc., before you go there, they only dip. I have worked through mine and most of the steel parts bolted on are now glav but it has not been a cheap process at all.

It was a few years ago that I was thinking of going down this route but by the time I had finished it would have cost me almost the same amount as buying a new chassis, delivered.

Give these a ring or email https://www.franklinsteelplc.co.uk/ got my 110 done there they take them up to Glasgow then bring them back, they have to be shot blasted really well and have no oil or paint ect on the inside, they are inspected before and if they are not clean enough they don't do them. They do Dip them first in some kind of acid cleaning tank before Galvanising. roughly between £150 /200 but you have to pay for blasting ect before that. https://www.franklinsteelplc.co.uk/of mine They Did an excellent job, inside and out . This chassis was 30 years old before.

Unless its a very new chassis and you're sure its not rotten on the inside I would just but a new galv chassis. When you add it all up it can't be much of a saving to do it that way

That is nice and best of all you just know it will all fit back together with little to no issues.

Thanks all, some good tips here. I have only recently bought my 90 and I'm currently abroad for work, but when I'm back I'll strip her down and see the quality of the chassis. As some of you are suggesting, perhaps it's worth just buying a new glav chassis. Will assess once back in Blighty.

Just picking everyone's brains for ideas at the moment!

These guys are right is ur old chassis worth galvanising ? Pre 98 can swapped easily enough government wise I’m told there’s loads of chassis on eBay already galvanised and could be used as a repair part ? Matched to your front cross member/ leg ? Best thing is have a word with ur local galvanisers go from there’s a place in Worksop but strip it get ur chipping hammer out if it’s hollow and weak not really worth it ur only patching bad metal there’s also a place on eBay offering half chassis £750 so if fronts good pair em that way new metal galvanised maybe cheaper and legal
