110 Foxy

New Member
I was wondering if someone could help me please?

I have a Land Rover Defender 110. During June 2012 I had a new rear cross member fitted by a local 4x4 “Specialist” (this was painted with Hammerite on the outside and undersealed on the inside), I recently noticed some paint blistering on the outside face and decided to investigate. As you will see from the attached photo I am left with large and small corrosion holes and more paint blisters too (not quite sure what’s behind them!).

To me it looks like this corrosion is a lot more than 18 months old, but I could do with an expert opinion if possible. I obviously don’t live near the sea, my Land Rover is garaged and not off-roaded. I was therefore very surprised to see the this amount of corrosion on a piece of steel that is supposed to be only 18 months old! :mad2:

Any comments/advice would be very much appreciated.

Thanks.

Thanks for the info.

Was treated/painted when it was fitted.
The garage says it was a new Britpart cross member.
I've got the receipt.

Cheers.

Thing is though, the talk of Britpart producing poor quality parts has been around for a while. There's nothing to stop someone asking a garage or who ever what brand of parts they normally fit and then going and researching them and making an informed decision to spend their money on it.

I cut off a pattern x member a little while ago that had been very badly fitted for a very high price by a very well known lr specialist for a person on this forum, truly shocking:rolleyes:

Thanks for the replies.

Going to push for a genuine Land Rover Cross member and I'm not expecting to pay a penny!

The garage who originally fitted the cross member said they could "hack it off and put a new one on", with that type of work description they won't be going anywhere near my 110!

A lesson learned a ****part fitted by a :censored: garage!

dont get a genuine one, they are ****e rust traps.

get a pressbrake/blacksheep off road one. Will out last the rest of the landrover.

Many people happy with them, have a google. If i needed a rear x-member i would get one of his.

either get him to fit or buy one off him then get a mobile welder to fit it, doesnt need a garage

Genuine are cheap thin metal and will rust. There is a member who owns a machine shop who makes a very heavy duty rear cross member, that is the best on the market. And many many LZ members have had them fitted and no complaints , nothing but :praise:.. He even ships them for DIY or shops to install. There is another member who has a repair service and they use Cleves rear cross member for there customers.

*Hint* The gentleman called Pressbrake (who posted above) comes highly recommended on here and makes probably the best replacement rear cross members on the market (amongst many other things) at Black Sheep off road.

Hi guys,
Many thanks for the info.
The "specialist" garage which fitted it said that it was a new Britpart crossmember and that they would contact their technical department.
They also said it could be "hacked off and another one stuck on". With that quality of workmanship they wont be going anywhere near my 110 again.
I intend pushing for compensation, a new genuine Land Rover part fitted by a reputable garage.
Will keep you posted.
Thanks.
