Hi guys,
Many thanks for the info.
The "specialist" garage which fitted it said that it was a new Britpart crossmember and that they would contact their technical department.
They also said it could be "hacked off and another one stuck on". With that quality of workmanship they wont be going anywhere near my 110 again.
I intend pushing for compensation, a new genuine Land Rover part fitted by a reputable garage.
Will keep you posted.
Thanks.

seriously a genuine part is inferior to a good pressbrake after market one

Products

Genuine isnt best when it comes to chassis parts. LR skimped on the chassis big time lol

dont waste your time with a genuine one, you will find it will rust again as they are made cheaply with poorly sealed seams.

if you MUST use a genuine one then atleast get the garage to weld up ALL the seams that are on it.

Hi Guys,

New to the forum!! Just seen page 2. Will check things out and keep you posted.

Thanks for all the advice.

There you go, Brit part:doh:

As a Landy Zone Virgin............... First rule never use or allow Brit parts to be installed. Unless they are OEM or Branded LR parts. If you buy brit part you will buy 2,3,4 times They are very cheap parts. Buy quality parts and you buy once. Either demand your money back for chalk it up to experience. But do not let them fit another brit part cross member

what part did you miss about Genuine being a inferior part to What press break makes? Your choice, your money, your Defender, your mistake:doh:

+1 recommending Pressbrake. He did a cracking job replacing the god awful mess that a certain well known specialist in Bradford did to mine. And it cost less!

MOT guys were well impressed with the work.

Just get the garage to give you the money back for supplying and fitting that cross member and then use that to have a decent one fitted by someone who cares about landys!

Dont Britpart now do a 2 year warranty?
Not saying buy britpart just as the xmember is only 18 months old.

What year i your 110 as from the pic it looks a bit like a td5 which can suffer badly
secondly need more pics as it doesnt look like extensions have been repaired as I can see the central weld seam.
I dont know in your case but I have seen vehicles where the owner has paid for a new x member and Ive inspected it when supposed early failure has occured it has actually been a bodged filled and painted lash up:mad:

Thanks for the replies.

Going to push for a genuine Land Rover Cross member and I'm not expecting to pay a penny!

The garage who originally fitted the cross member said they could "hack it off and put a new one on", with that type of work description they won't be going anywhere near my 110!

A lesson learned a ****part fitted by a :censored: garage!

Brit Part Rear cross members do not have a good reputation.
I have found Brit Parts don't last very long. In the last two years I have changed two thermostat temperature sender units. They give up after 9 months.
Brit Part Silencer didn't quiet last two years. I too try and stay away from Brit Parts, I could go on and on.
Your garage probably went for the cheapest one they could find on line.

I got one made and fitted by Ian at MIB components. It was a 3mm and although it was fitted about three years ago It has lasted well without any signs of rust etc.
Another option is Pressbrake. People on here have left good favorable comments. If I was in your position I would get a quote from both. I think you will find Pressbrake comes in a bit less. It will be helpful talking to both of them as I find you always learn something.

This is the link to my post regarding my experience with MIB:
http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f7/rear-cross-members-defender-series-158552.html

But do check them both out as a lot of people swear by Pressbrake

comimiserations mate I nearly went down the britpart route. but just finished putting a rear crossmember from clive at blacksheep on mine and spent the change on a tin of hammerite a few beers.
cheers toby

Thanks to everyone that has offered advice, being a newby to LZ it's much appreciated.

As you can see from my profile picture (which I've just added), my 110 is my "pride and joy" :)

The garage reckon it was a new style ****part, they have only been made for the last 2 years, said they'd fitted about 20 with no complaints, yeah! Apparently they will replace it and send it back for analysis!! Going to try and get my money back instead.

Hi Pressbrake,

Have attached some photos of the underside (and one of the opposite side to the corroded area), hope these are what you need. The chassis treatment was by another garage which I'm very pleased with.

Taking it to a material testing lab tomorrow (a mate of mine works there), there is a Landy Owner who works there and knows a bit about rust, so will get his opinion if the cross member was new 18 months ago.

Can you let me know how much it would cost for you to supply and fit a new cross member and whereabouts in the UK you are please?

Thanks for your help.

Many thanks.
