I will be surprised if its the rad as the normal reason for tdi rads to fail is the fins rot off from the outside.

Brainwave has just occurred, are you fitting the correct 200 tdi stat as when the stat opens it also shuts off the bypass hose so forcing all the coolant through the rad, a std stat will not do this.

This is the kiddy http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bearmach-...747?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item3aac388a53

Yup I picked it up from my specialist the more I think it's either in the rad or the gauge I'm going to have a look see where the gauge goes into the water and just test it

I been looking at other Pages and there all saying stuff like its a earth wire etc and they took dash out to re fit one...using that Tim one looks nice and simple no wired no nothing :) just fit guage to dash and run the pipe to the stat housing...I'm ordering one tonight lynall

You do need to wire in the light bulb but the old std gauge will have that so no worries.
Over the years Ive seen so many posts ref land rover engine temp and no one seems to really know whats what, swap this sensor for that, or maybe wiring/gauge fault, whereas with the tim jobby theres no arguing.

Just remember the capillairy tube cannot be cut etc, so you fit it from the dash end first then feed the capilliary tube through the dash down to the engine, I fitted mine through the engine lifting eye, then wanted the eye for another job so had to cut the eye to remove it!

What is the heat reading on yours?

Ive got two tdi engines 1 in a 90 and 1 in a series 2, both run pretty much the same temps.
Takes four miles or so across town to get any heat out of the heater, one mile later climbing a very steep long hill the gauge goes to approx 95 then stat opens and temp drops to 85/88 and stays there all the time the engine is working, if you drop to town speeds the temp can drop to just over 70 in the winter and the heater output really is crap, even with a rad muff fitted winter is a sorry time to drive a 200tdi!
You really wont believe just how cold a 200 runs., I once drove 12 miles with a knack new stat and only result was engine temp was slightly higher than normal, any other car would have boiled.
Off road at idle speed again temps drops, but worked hard at slow speed the temp can get up towards a hundred, then its electric fan time.

Pretty much the same as mine, but the dash gauge was touching the orange, so after changing head gasket, water pump. rad, stat etc, temp still sat in the same place,
so I drilled and tapped the branch on the water pump and inserted an auxillary sender with gauge, so when its touching orange its was actually running at 78'C it climbs to approx 85'C then I can see the stat open as the gauge drops back. As said in hard off road at slow speed it does get hotter and i have fitted an electric fan with a simple dash switch, seems to be the best solution as the fan can be turned off for wading

Ye my fan has a switch I just weren't sure how hot it should get tbh mine creeps past 95 but I think it's just my 90 running harder as in got big wide tyres and they already make it slower from the drag etc...I'm going to test see if the rad has any crap in in the next few days just so I know

Mines on 34 inch tyres and basically gets thrashed each and every time its driven temps as above
Genuine tdi 90 std 1.4 tfer box, loads of armour, big winch, basically an everyday 90!
If your rad is blocked I will be amazed.

I'm starting to think mine is ok as the hottest it gets is about 98 then it cools to about 92-94

Unplug the temp gauge, problem solved. These 200 tdis just don't die. I ran mine for over a year with no fan at all...
