With the filter process, why are you using drums/ tanks. Why not decant waste oil into a 45gal drum, pump it though your filters straight into the jerry can / car?

Mines exactly as you see in the picture, very simple setup ( not the best ) just to see how she ran. Straight into the drum, pump through the twin filters, straight into the tank of the car, fill with half a tank of used oil, then top up with straight diesel.

As a test i had a tractor in the other day, oil hadnt been changed in years, had a massive failure of the head gasket and there was alot of water in the oil. After letting the water settle to the bottom of a tub i sucked the oil off the top and filtered it though the drum and into the car. Abit more smoke under load but ran perfectly other than that. Did 150miles, fires straight up in the mornings no problem.

The only oil ive found to be a problem was really thick new gear oil, engine hunts for around a minute until the engines warmed up.

Mines a standard 200tdi, with no mods to the fuel system, but will be adding a heat exchanger similar to the td5s so im able to run a higher mix of used oil.

Im not here to discuss the legality of it. Just to share my results.
 
Thanks for the reply. Engineer at work is going to keep the waste oil asideand is digging out some fitlers & housings.
Just need to get sorted on a pump or compressor.

Thats because the oil is too thick until warm. Try diluting it a bit more.
Im not here to discuss the legality of it. Just to share my results.
Thats my sentiments exactly. What peeps choose to do is up to them.
 
I've just been given Baldwin filters BD103. Reads as though they do a double filter and if the oil doesn't pass the grade it is returned. These are engine oil filters, about 40 of them. All I need is something to screw them too. Do you think these are ok as a primary filter?
 
Just collected my first batch of used engine oil, found the place by accident, there's a small yard with a tyre depot in it, i was calling there for tyres and it was shut, the mechanic from the next unit came out so i asked the question, "bloody loads of it mate, can't get rid of it" he can now LOL, says he can't give all to me as he has to show he's disposing of it correctly. I'm sure i've seen somewhere that a waste oil collection notice can be downloaded? Anybody know of it ?
 
Found it, it's called a Waste Transfer Notice the guys that run on veg use these forms, having read it i'm not sure how much use to us they are. Veg oil collectors are exempt from needing an environmental permit as they can claim its for personal use but can we make the same claim? I don't want to put my name and address on one of these just to get a visit in 2months and my motor crushed!!!

If they are giving it away then I'd take what you can and forget about any paperwork. Been getting mine that way for nearly two tears now. No reason to change.

I printed a few collection forms off and dropped em off at the garage (blank) the garage owner says he'll fill them in himself and save all his oil for me:D
 
Finally got my filtration system up and running, its on a gravity feed at the moment as i have no compressor, except for a cheap tyre pressure one. Filtered 70 ltrs in about 4 hrs. Mixed 10% unleaded in before filtering, then mixed it 10ltr oil to 20 ltrs of diesel. Done 90 miles and tickover has dropped slightly and there's an increase in the smoke, seems to be ok when it warms up and it drives fine. I'll increase the mix 50/50 next time i put some in.

Experience here says do NOT use petrol for thinning down the oil.

Even quite a small amount of petrol seems to cause very poor ignition in 300tdi and TD5 Disco.

I suggest you do exactly what you are doing except FORGET THE PETROL.
I think you will be good at a 50-50 mix even without the petrol.

Remember, every litre of freebie oil you add to the tank saves you about £1.35 these days. If you go 50-50, your fuel is costing 67½p a litre.
That has to be good.

Was thinking about this,could the same process be used for used cooking oil from the chippy:eek: rather than getting into making biodiesel? Ie just filter the used cooking oil thru a 5 micron filter and mix 50/50 derv?

Do a search on here for threads about veg oil, plenty of 'em with all the info you need.

I've been running on it for 2 years;)

If you add anything add ceatane to the mix:D
 
how can you add a measurement method ?


Well what ever the amount you make then just add what it says to add on the bottle of cetane. We add that a coupe of times in the winter when it's sub zero aids in cold starting. I like that better than injector cleaner.:D

but cetane is a diesel combustion rating method, as octane is for petrol

you can get so called boosters but am buggered if you can buy a bottle of cetane ?

When I was there in august I went to Halfords to see what they had to offer and they had cetane in 1 liter bottles of it on the shelf. Along with octane boost for petro.

Was on the shelf with all the other additives

but neat ''cetane'' doesn't exist
