Your temps are not cold enough for any 5w30,5w40 oils..... Oil also carries heat to be gotten rid of through the oil cooler, 10w what ever carries more heat away than a 5w what ever grade oil

Your referring to its cold temperature viscosity here, I'm not sure what relevance it has to its cooling properties??

Then why do they go to a 50 weight oil in the southwest of the USA in the summer months when the air temps is in the 110F-120F and roads surfaces are in the 200F

the oil is only thinner in cool temperatures as soon as the engine is upto to temp it goes up to the higher viscosity, the way the grading system works its possible that you could have an oil with a high 30's grading and one with a low 40's grading meaning they are actually not that far apart viscosity wise

The W doesn't mean weight it means winter and if you had a 50W oil then it would be very thick in cool weather

presumably oil gets too thin in extreme heat ,but id have thought modern cooling systems and synthetics negated that somewhat
That is why is said in the summer
In the winter month they drop back to a 30-40w oilIn the winter here 10w30 is the normal and summer months 10w40 which is the same as your temps if not warmer
5w-30 fully synthetic is the oil used by landrover when I used to have it serviced by them , I have carried on using that grade of oil on mine . Using 10w-40 semi would be going backwards in time to pre 2000 cars , Oil technology has moved on .

That why I only use correct grade fully sythectic oil as it will last the service interval !
VW have a 2 year or 20000 mile long life oil service but only if you use the correct 5w-30 fully syth to there 504 or 507 spec ,
Use 10w-40 semi in a VW 1.9tdi PD engine and it would not last very long .
I only do about 3000 a year with an annual oil change .

That's correct. Semi 10w40. Just had a look on Castrols site for our v6 and they quote 0w40 (UK) but also list others depending on temp. I'm sticking with 10w40 semi. I always liked the Castrol adverts when I was little.

This is true, however, it is well documented that their diesel V6s (in Audi A4s etc) go tits up with cam wear on the extended services 'as recommended by VW' even using the correct VW spec oil, whereas owners who had done shorter servicing didn't. Personally, I use VW507 and still change it every 6k or a year, whichever comes first in my van, whereas I changed the computer service schedule in my Golf (PD130) to short service instead of extended and still used VW507. A lot of people in the VW world think the long service schedules in diesels are wrong and merely a marketing ploy. The 1.9 is an amazing engine, but still needs regular oil changes of the highest quality. I always buy the trade packs at my local motorfactors and it's usually quite cheaper as it has less fancy packaging despite being exactly the same as the stuff on the front shelves. I always go by the ACEA number and VW/BMW etc rating.
