I doubt I'd ever buy another direct drive compressor for home use.

Belt drive is slightly more costly, but so much calmer to use!

"would I be right in thinking that 150L should do me for spraying the landy panel-by-panel... and that I could add an air-bank at a later date?"

24 litres did mine panel by panel.......

how ever i now have a 150 litre airmaster (it was a gift - i was going to buy the Clarke se16c150 twin cylinder air industrial compressor as per chris) but you cant beat free....ive connected them in tandem so either the little one is just adding to the air storage OR when they are both going i seem to have endless air they live in a second shed round the back of my workshop so i dont hear the noise so much (both direct drive) and are plumbed via direct take offs on the tank via hoses to regulator and regulator/oiler in the garage and going to extendable hoses.

This set up copes with my impact gun, needle scaler , plasma cutter , da sander , die grinder (probably what i use it for most)

if the big one died tomorrow id buy the se16c150 tomorrow (funds permitting) as air in the workshop is still the best thing i did imo.

you're right it does. 2 issues:

1) after the farce I had with my leaky engine crane, I never want to deal with machine mart again... cheap chinese crap and terrible customer service
2) no Amp rating declared on their page. I've read something suggesting that some of the sealey's have a "soft start" to reduct start up draw.
Totally agree on the Machine Mart comment. One of the worst companies I have ever dealt with.
Is this too dear for you? Costco are an American company where the customer is king. Great to deal with but you need to take membership which is about £30 a year.

Thanks for all replies folks.

I bit the bullet and bought the Sealey SAC3153B last night. It has the best CFM figures of anything that claims to run on a 13A feed. I know a previous relply that the re-charge function blew the fuse, but I'll just have to find a workaround if that happens. Obviously I'll have breakers on the socket, which should save me some plug fuses.

We used to cut a bolt and put that in for a fuse on the 240 welding machines. H&S wasn't as big an issue back then

My 3 hp compressor is perfectly happy with a 13A plug, so it's not necessarily going to be a problem. Plus, the socket in the shed where I plug it in is on quite a long spur. I haven't even discoloured the plastic around the live pin yet. Of course, I'd like to have a more substantial supply, but in a rented house it's not worth investing in the structure.
