HI.

Sorry to put this not in the "wanted " forum but im a newbie and it wont let me.

Im collecting my first Land Rover tomorrow, its in great condition but im rooting around for a set of rubber D1 mats for front and back and and boot liner. Ideally im after proper fitted ones.

Also, I keep reading about the removal of the EGR valve in order to help efficiency and economy. Is this a worthy thing to do on a 300TDI and is it an easy job or not. What would the costs involved be.

Im in Ashford Kent BTW.

Many thanks

Hi

Welcome to the forum(s). You will find plenty of help and information on here mate. Get to know the search functions and you won't go far wrong.

Have you had a look at the foam sound deadening stuff under your carpets. It soaks up water from leaks and just speeds up the rust. My D1 had carpets that were dry to touch, but underneath was a different story. May be worth getting the trim strip up to have a check. EGR valve was the first thing I did after changing the filters, oil and belts. Very simple kit, most 4x4 suppliers sell em. Make sure you get one with a decent quality blanking plate though. Think I paid about 18 notes for the plate, new Allen bolts, top hose and vacuum plug. I bought mine, but you can easily make your own if you want.

Takes no time at all if you can undo the EGR bolts on the manifold. May be worth soaking them in some penetrating spray for a bit before trying. Oh and do it while the engines cold!

Hi there, welcome to LandyZone and congrats on your new purchase.

Before I go any further to answer your questions, can I ask one?

How enthusiastic/experienced a mechanic are you? Do you enjoy getting your hands dirty and getting the spanners out?

Cheers
Dave

Welcome.

I would add that the search facility is pretty useful. I'd easily have triple the number of posts were it not for that feature - I lurk far more than I write!!!

I have these fitted in the front plus the standard dealer issue rubber efforts in the back and boot area. The standard disco ones came with my car but they appear on ebay all the time for between a tenner and £50 for the full set.

Reference your EGR question.

I was dubious about the EGR removal but with the kit for about 6 quid (consisting of a blanking plate, a gasket and a few bolts), and a fuel economy of about 22-25MPG, I thought it has to be worth a try.

I removed my EGR which was a 15 minute job. (Unbolted EGR from exhaust manifold, fitted blanking plate, sealed intercooler hose Y-piece, sealed tiny air hose which runs to brake servo, taped up electrical connector). While I was at it, I changed the oil, and gave her new air and fuel filters, and topped up all the other oils. Took her out for a drive the next day and got 35 MPG!! On A roads at about 55-60 the whole way. Couldn't be more pleased. I'm not sure exactly how much removing the EGR contributed to my improved fuel economy in comparison to the other servicing bits I did, but for the sake of 15 minutes work, and less than a tenner, it has to be worth it.

PS Good luck getting the disco tomorrow and welcome to the site. You will find the knowledge here is second to none, and trust me, the first problem the disco throws at you, you will find yourself doing what I always do, running in the house to ask how to fix it on landyzone, and almost always, somebody here will have the answer.

Well, theres no point blowing exhaust gas through the intake is there.

Hands down case closed job done.

Got my egr blanking kit on ebay for a fiver, like others have said check under your carpets.Mine were dry as a bone but under the sound proofing was wet and had some surface rust on the floor pan.

Make sure you get some pics up and start a build/repair thread lol

Urm, i don't know!

Not really sure how you could confuse the two and/or why altering the pump timing on any stock motor is a wise move...

They all seem to get mentioned in the same breath on here... EGR, pump timing star wheel wotsit and de-cat.

I'm pretty happy with the "performance" (lol!) of mine so I've not really had the inclination to research the subject in any great depth at all. That and I've never owned a diesel before so it feels like I'm starting from scratch in terms of experience!

Star wheel thingy is fueling adjustment not timing and yes it's a common mod from standard but totally seperate from EGR

Hi folks. Thanks for all your comments.

I've made a prelim to do list with the help of this forum and best mates, fellow D2 and D3 owners. Sadly though both are unwell so struggling to get out and about.

I'm not much of a mechanic but I'm hoping to pick up along the way the basics involved in servicing and maintenance. I'll probably leave the heavy stuff, on ramp work to the pros though. I'm in touch with local land rover independent garage who I'm going to get to do a once over when I collect it.

The underneath and chassis is in great condition so high on my list is a trip to a decent waxoyl specialist. (Any recommendations), EGR valve, bigger battery and that should do me for a while.

I'll get some pics up soon.

Picked it up today. Very pleased. Forgot to take some pics today but will do so in daylight tomorrow. Drives very nicely, smooth gears and no odd noises. Although slight groan from steering wheel on slow full lock and I get a trailer symbol appear on dash board whenever I indicate.

Looking forward to some fun days out in it for sure.

Does the trailer symbol flash once and then goes out?
If so, it's working exactly as it's supposed to.
