right as my 90 soft top is f'ing freezing in the morning and i cant not afford a night heater, im thinking of other options for a warmer morning. Has anyone tried to fit a 240v low wattage eletric heater (via inverter and split charge system) i was thinking of one of those flat panel ones and install it on the bulk heat behind the seats (heated seats) and then on a timer so it will come on half hour before i go to work. any thoughts (other than buy a coat, hat and gloves)

errr... i would get a fire extinguisher to go with that proposed setup... sounds rather dangerous :D

I would just buy a good winter bike jacket....

the bike gear I use, I've ridden in -4 temperatures and dont get cold, if you take in account the wind chill while doing 70..and still dont get cold, its probably more than enough to be driving the landy

What engine do you have? Believe it or not, a soft top is a lot warmer than a hard top or a station wagon on cold mornings because you haven't got all that ice cold aluminium to keep it nice and refrigerated inside, and we still get most of the same drafts that you do! Any land rover engine can be set up to ensure that your cab is toastie warm within the first 5-7 minutes of driving. The 200tdi is probably one of the coolest running land rover engines, where as a v8 or a 2.5 N/A or 2.5 TD tend to run pretty hot. If you've got a tdi that isn't warming up you might want to consider flushing the cooling system through and flush the heater matrix separately back and forth a few times until the water runs clear. Make sure that you have an 88 degree thermostat fitted as opposed to an 83 degree thermostat and then invest in a rad muff or simply blank off half of your radiator with a sheet of plastic or something similar. Although the 200tdi should maintain an engine operating temperature of 88 degrees (or the equal of whatever thermostat you have installed) this isn't always the case and I don't fully know why because technically the thermostat should not allow water to leave the engine if it is any cooler.

If you have a 2.5 N/A, 2.5 TD or V8, these engines should all heat up pretty quickly. If it is not doing so, flush the cooling system out as well as the heater matrix and see if that makes a difference. It'll save you spending un-necessary money on cabin warming equipment that you might not need! If that fails, I'd be more tempted to try something along these lines 12V Ceramic Car Heater Warmer Demister Defroster - NEW on eBay (end time 16-Dec-10 06:29:02 GMT)

Looks a good little idea that steve..i'd be wary of driving with the rad completely covered, as you found, the temp rises very quickly...i tried it last winter and bad things happened...very bad things indeed.

After I cleared the frost I fired my 110 up this morning and drove off straight away, onto the main road doing 30 and within 3.5 miles or around 8 minutes it was up to temp on my dash and hot air coming out the heater. Its the same in summer.

Am I doing something wrong? :D I must be one of the lucky ones...... my VW Passat takes more that twice as long.

Just refurbed my heater unit in the 90.
New fan, cleaned out the matrix & re sealed with new foam.
I get warmish air now after only 1 mile- enough to demist the screen :)
2-3 minutes, switch fan to full & its TOASTY

Clean yer matrix m8 or check your seals to make sure yer heats not going back into the engine bay instead of the cab :)

theres a cracking walk through thread on here somewhere....

well it is a 200tdi with a 84 stat in it but i think you missed the point. the car is warm when up to running temp but at tick over it does not get above cold (and i run it without a fan). left it running this morning for half an hour and only just about stated to defrost the screen (not even touched the side windows.) im thinking one of these TUBULAR HEATER 2FT 610MM GREENHOUSE SUNHOUSE 240V NEW! on eBay (end time 19-Dec-10 16:46:50 GMT) with a split charge system with a drop out relay so i can still start it.

Have you thought of a winter insulation kit? such as the one fitted in the wolf?
they sell them on ebay (craddocks) i have on my wolf solf top and it ready keeps the heat in and made a massive different to the warmth! landrover heaters are good its just the fact the heat excapes!!

The ones they sell on ebay as insulation are in fact radio wave supresent (im ex reme) not really designed as winter insulation unless of course it is the proper winterized stuff (hens teeth) but i aint seen any. Any way the problem isnt keeping heat in its just getting some heat in the first place.

ahh check out my website .... (dads but help out as i'm only 19) Turrets and Tracks
