2.25 petrol never fitted a clutch before but gonna have a go . Watched a vid and the bloke used some kind of spline thingy from an old gear box to line it up, I ain't got one of those is there anything else I can use that might be lying about garage ? Thanks

What the chap in the video had was an old first motion shaft from an old box. However you can use other items to line up clutch plate with the fly wheel before tightening the clutch unit into place. The last time I did mine I used a long socket that was a good fit through the splines of both items. Others will come back with other ways.
TIP. It is important the clutch plate is fitted the correct way around. Some replacement have " this side to flywheel " written on them.

can you remember what size socket Mate, hope mines got writing to tell me which side otherwise Im knackered coz I wont have a clue :(
 
Sorry do not remember the size, anyway the outer diameter [ thickness ] of cheap socket is likely greater than that of another more expensive make.
Even a good fitting wooden dowel would do. [ broom handle ] Several "how to without tool video's on the tube.
 
I’ll be using a long socket for mine.

many moons ago I had a universal clutch alignment tool. Just a rod with screw on bushes of varying diameters.
 
16 mil seems the only one that fits quite snug , would it be better with the bar on ? also has the right side marked for idiots like me.
Gonna watch a couple more vids before I attempt it.

Mark one eyeball works as well
Obviously an alignment tool is nicer
I do not have an alignment tool for my Land Rovers and have done a few clutches, all lined up by sight
I have always taken the engine out to do them
 
Bit of dowelling with masking tape round it, put layers on till it matches the diameter of the hole, then use it to line it up, do the pressure plate bolts up just enough to hold the clutch plate so it can be moved but then holds it again once aligned.
But the box in and trial fit it to the clutch, once the spines line up it'll go home, then take it off again very carefully so as not to disturb the clutch plate position then tighten up the pressure plate bolts to the correct torque. You'll only need to move it back a tiny bit.
But all of the methods mentioned above will work. It ain't rocket science!
 
Thanks Everyone think I've got it now. While we're one What else goes in here before I fit it all together,is there a fork ect ??

Oh dear!
do you not have a Haynes manual or anything?
There should be a thrust bearing and yes, a fork to actuate it with, connected to the clutch slave cylinder.
Did you not find all that when you took the old one apart?
And by the way, didn't a thrust, or release, bearing come with the kit? As it is a good idea to replace it while you are changing the clutch.
 
The forks sit on the ball. The spring steel clip on the forks tensions behind the washer on the ball. The shaft on the forks engages with the slave cylinder and the thrust bearing slides on the shaft. :confused:
 
Thanks Men, think I need to find part numbers and order, there wasn't any bits there unless they've gone missing somewhere
 
Well the gear box was found in a shed god look knows how long it was in there but it seems ok, and the engine is Military, so will have to investigate further before I order. Can you tell from these pics ?
