Well the gear box was found in a shed god look knows how long it was in there but it seems ok, and the engine is Military, so will have to investigate further before I order. Can you tell from these pics ?
The hilarious thing is that of the angles you could have taken a pic from, the one that would tell us is one taken looking directly at/into the bellhousing!!!!!
But look for numbers on the engine and the gearbox, that'll mean a lot to the cognoscenti!!!
 
I’m doin my clutch today. That’s how I sent the pic :D

I used a 16mm long socket that sat in the spigot bush very nicely but the hole in the clutch plate is a couple of mm bigger so wound a few wraps of pvc insulation tape round the other end of the socket. :)

Still not sure of part numbers, but these match Bobs exactly

Can you remember part numbers Bob ? Please dont tell me I have to turn my engine upside down to fit it :D
Ive never known a part number for anything :eek:

I just go off the car. Problem with series Land rovers is you never know if the gearbox or engine is series 2 or 3. Mine is just about everything so I generally go off the picture.

Just looked on rimmer bros and they have on for £96 but half the bits aint on it. :eek::eek::eek:

Thats a series 3 gearbox do a web search for smithies landrover brings up a NZ website where you can download manual parts manuals etc in pdf format.
If the clutch fork is stupid money I have one I will part with.

Like I say, this would fit mine but who knows what you have got.

The little ball in your bell housing should be polished to a mirror finish and the washer behind it clean. The little pink plastic socket (above) slips in the hole in the fork. this goes on the ball with a dab of grease. The large U shaped clip then bolts to the far side of the fork and reaches round to grasp the back of the washer, loosly holding the fork onto the ball. The smaller clip holds the push rod in the small hole at the end of the fork.
The whole thing is quite loose and wobbly until the slave cylinder applies pressure on one end of the fork and the open end of the fork presses up behind the thrust bearing that runs up and down the main shaft.

The fat end goes against the clutch fins with the fork behind it.

Just Noticed something, different the front on mine is different to Bobs whats going on here am I missing something ? or is it a Military thing ?

Ohhhhh. I dont like the look of that :eek:

Has it been simplified so grunts can change one. :D:D:D
 
I’d try and find out what pressure bearing to use with one of thems.

the rest ain’t an issue, it’s just there to supply the pressure.
 
As the bearing is pushed against those three tabs the plate nearest the gearbox will be lifted away from the clutch plate allowing it to free wheel. Same as the fins on mine.
At this moment the bearing takes up the rotation of the shaft. As they ain’t a super bearing and only ment to be used momentarily (till you can change gear) they tend to wear quite rapidly. I would check there isn’t a special one that is strong enough for the point load x3 as apposed to the relatively flat load on multiple fins.
It’s one of the reasons they burn out when people are too bone idle to go into neutral and lift the clutch when stationary. That little dry bearing ain’t going to last long with a clog camped out on the left peddle.
 
I’m sure they work ok otherwise it would be pointless fitting one when off to kill foreigners.
Ask the supplier to recommend the correct pressure bearing.

all should be good.
