I'm about to do a 200tdi engine transplant, and want to change the clutch on the 200tdi before I put it into the vehicle. I was told that if you are leaving on the old clutch plate, then mark it so you put it back the same way you took it off, so the flywheel will still have it's original balance.

But what if I want to put a new plate on as well? How do you rebalance the flywheel? and is it essential? I know I will need a clutch alignment tool to do the job, but is there anything else you think I should know? or any tips, or anything to watch out for? This will be my first attempt at changing a clutch, and want to make sure I get it right, as I really don't want to pull the engine out again once it's installed!
Any advice much appriciated. :)

LR never balanced the crankshaft with the flywheel, clutch, and crank pulley fitted. Only performance engine builders go to them extremes. Just bolt the new one on and forget about it. Thats what your local indy garage would do. So long as the clutch plate is lined up properly and fitted the correct way round (most are marked telling you which side goes towards the flywheel) then you will have no trouble getting the engine and gearbox to fit together. If they wont go then its because the clutch is not aligned centrally.

you dont have to mark it or put back in same position indvidual patrs are balanced individually, fit full clutcfh kit stc8358bb borg and beck kit is good 8566l sigot bush and ftc2957hd release arm and frc5180 pivot if ball is worn, clutch plate has to be fitted right way round and lined up centrally with tool ,bolts need to be tightened so that cover pulls up squarely (a bit on each till touching fly wheel all the way round)

thats reassuring. thanks shifty. So basically all I need is a clutch alignment tool then That I should be able to get from halfords and the like, then I can bolt on a decent borg & beck clutch.

Ok, thanks for that, and the codes. :)

Use a standard Landie clutch alignment tool, also known as a screwdriver handle!

It does the job just as well and can be used for other things too.

Did mine by eye - but I have done more than a few in my time.
After fiddling with the not very effective clutch alignment tool, I virtually did mine by eye too. I did test it with the tool though, and it looks spot on.
Mind you I can see why some people would have probs getting the engine to slot in, you only have to be 1mm or so out and it would never go in.

I'm at the moment disconnecting the fuels line to the old V8 pump on the chassis rail, (a right fiddly job getting to it all) need to do that to run the lines straight to the lift pump on the new engine.

if its the one I am thinking of, its located in the centre of the flywheel.
lots of write-ups on here as how to replace it :D

Do you need to also remove the flywheel to replace this spigot bush? I'm thinking you have too? Also how hard is it to get out, and the new one in? any tips on this? It wasn't giving me any problems with the V8 in, does it really need to be replaced?:(

Please search. Loads of how-toos on here.
Basically fill the spigot bush with grease and hammer a close fitting metal rid int hole. Grease will push old one out. Then tap noo one in till it bottoms.

No yu do not need to remove flywheel and yu don't have to change the bush, if both gearbox spigots are the same size, but it's a big job to change later on:(.

Are they sintered? Do they need priming with oil?
