My TD5 has just started to make a clonking noise if you waggle the steering, i.e. drive in a straight line and weave the car. The clonk happens just as you change direction, then as you change back again. It doesn't do it when the car is stationary and you can feel it through the steering and peddles. It only started yesterday after i had been driving in the snow and towing a car up a hill. Any ideas??
 
CV joint/s, trailing arm/A-frame bushes/joints, indeed any steering/suspension joint .. ;)
 
Your description says that it only happens once each time you change from one direction to the other, i.e. as the sideways thrust changes direction.
this would suggest that the bushes for the Panhard rods may be the problem. CV joints make more of a clicking sound on tight turns, especially when changing form forward to reverse and vice-versa.
 
Mine does exactly the same, when driving if I throw the weight from side to side by moving the steering wheel (obviously in a safe way!) I can make the steering knock, I can feel it through the floor.

I have been told (and shown) it is the rod in front of the front axel and apart from being annoying it will last until I can afford to fix it and it isn't dangerous.

the rod in front of your front axel is your steering rod m8 and if its knocking that probably means 1 or both ball joints are worn to excess THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS and should be repaired immediatly if the joint or joints seperate you CAN NOT STEER NO MORE not a big problem if your standing still but a MAJOR PROBLEM if you are travelling fast:doh:
 
Hold up don't panick just yet.

Check the panhard rod, then the drag link ball joints then the track rod ends then check steering shaft UJ's and steering box backlash. While you're at it check the tie bar on the steering box.

I'll have to get it up in the air in the next few days. I was hoping it was due to the cold making the rubbers in something hard, but not really any better today. Its almost like something is loose, when you initial turn the wheel it moves and until you change direction and the direction of load it does it again
 
Do the drop links go aswell?? Only ask as they always go on freelanders and make a similar noise.
 
I would roll with urban panzer, and think it is your anti roll bar bushes, really, really cheap won't harm you to change them anyway, and don't make the same mistake i did and just change the fronts, you might as well do the rear too. sounds exactly the same as mine although the noise did come gradual on mine. One way you can check the anti roll bar bushes is to get underneath the front of the disco, grab the anti roll bar with both your hands firmly and try and move it side to side, if theres movement then bingo.
