Hi All,

Problem on my s3 2.25 petrol started the other, all starting absolutely fine, until the evening, and all I get now when turning the ignition switch is a constant clicking from starter solenoid, it is only a couple of months old so am assuming it is something else, no movement from starter motor at all.

I have seen a possibility of earth somewhere, is this likely to also cause a constant clicking?

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Give the starter a few taps with a hammer then try start if still clicking tap the solenoid and try again if no luck check all earth straps. Hope this works

Battery knackered? Some battery voltages with the ignition off and with the solenoid clicking would be useful. But check all the lives and earths. The clicking is usually caused by the voltage across the solenoid coil disappearing when the starter motor is switched on - as a result of a duff battery or a high resistance in the starter circuit. The coil releases the switch, the voltage returns and it cycles through again - hence the clicking.

I had this issue and a new earth strap cured it (after I had bought a new starter but fitted it anyway).
Always try the cheaper this first before buying the expensive bits.

Hi all sorry been away for a couple of days, I have just check weer in battery and very low, so suspect that is knackered along with poss earth strap. Guess off to get battery tomorrow. Will let you know how it goes.

Hi Guys, New battery has sorted the problem. Also turns out the old battery was a little under powered, even when New.

Thanks for your help.

Always keep a hammer for a few light taps for this exact situation. Can also happen if the battery is new and/or has been recently fully charged.
