You could take the more techy approach Electrolytic Rust Removal aka Magic this is what i shall be using to clean up some brake calipers for my boys car

I'll see how they turn out from the vinegar first. I'm going to take them out and rinse them tomorrow

Landys developed a lovely couple of leaks so it'll give me a good excuse to use the tools I guess...
