Looks ok to me by the photos....time for a coat of something though!! Waxoil, Dinatrol, (old engine oil?)....plenty opinions on here.

Ok good! So just plain ole surface rust. Was meaning to have it all Waxyold in September but a series of broken starter motors and alternators drained my cash for it.

Ive got some flexible weather proof paint so i'll lather that on for the time being.

Good wire brushing and wash off again first ;)

I would have a think about that. In my opinion the surface rust will just get worse under the paint, and you then have the hassle of getting the paint off for rustproofing (if there is such a thing). If money is an issue at the moment, I would leave it as is, but keep it as clean as possible during the winter, and get in about it next year when its dry.

Yeah ive got a few bottles of Fertan which should do the job, used it before happily. Obviously I would treat the area before painting.

Still got to clean the underside with my new chassis washer! (to keep it clean till till next year) Then Ill get right on it properly.

Thanks guys.

Give anything you're concerned with a tap with a toffee hammer.
Otherwise as folk have said above, treat it and coat it.

brush it off and lather with some old oil for now then crack on and do a proper job when you the cash

Don't listen to this lot!

Thats fcuked you need a new chassis!

:D

Yup, as everybody's saying, that's retrievable if you don't let it get much worse. In fact your exhaust pipe bracket looks in better condition than mine.

Is there a bolt missing, or has its head come off, where the towbar strut joins the chassis? In the first picture?

Yeah I tried to remove the adjustable hitch to fit a steel tank guard and supprise supprise the bolt sheard off. Havnt been able to do much since then, so I left it be.

Im heading out now to Fertan it all, now its dry.

On the plus side the Karcher Chassis Cleaner came and it looks like a lovley peice of kit! Well made and rises up pretty high, good for getting the muck off after a P&P/Laning trip. Also came with a bottle of 'protective chassis wax' which to be honest looks like fairy liquid.

WE used to spray the chassis with waste oil, but you have to keep away from rubber and brakes etc. I found using a cut down brush and the oil helped. or you could spray waxoil and if you get the internal kit do the inside of the chassis. I had a van with a chassis for over 25 years and it went through every mot. Getting some ramps made up and a old carpet helps, plastic, carpet, ramps run up then paint up the chassis. when done throw away the carpet. plastic stops the oil on the drive.

Chassis looks fine, for the moment, but I agree, it will get worse. Always clean any rust up with a wire brush / or a grinder. Coat it with Phosphoric acid (Rust eater) then protect it with good quality paint then stone chip over that in the hard wearing areas if you want it to last. Most important of all keep it as clean as possible when you are finished. :)

I was told along time ago that only fools leave there chassis and 4x4 muddy after off roading.

And thats why, it all sticks in the places you don't want it to and rots it!
