yeh, that's with a real light foot. No heavy acceleration.

One thing I think does not help is that it seems to hold the lower gears when cold - maybe the first couple of miles. Guess the 'box needs to heat up first. Seems OK after that.

Synergy 2e set on 7 for the Pierburgh MAF and low torque. Wonder if 8 or 9 would help?

The box certainly holds the lowers gears right enough for a mile or so - but just wait until the really cold weather sets in.

I found that it was short journeys that wrecked mpg figures.

When I was doing a 2 X 5 miles commute to work, fuel consumption was terrible - around 24mpg.

With my current 2 X 35 miles daily journey it's up around 34mpg - but that includes queues and traffic lights etc.

On a longer 200 + mile trip it's 40 or better depending how much of a hurry I'm in. ;)

This is interesting as I have had mine for about 3 1/2 weeks now,
5 days a week we do 4x 4.5-5mile trips each day and if its really lucky it will get a few more short trips over the weekend,,if we are going any distance we take my car,,

The first 2 weeks we got 25.6 Mpg over 235 miles
this last 1 1/2 weeks we have had a Intercooler hose go and lots
and I mean lots of black smoke from the back although we still used it all the time,,I will report on the MPG,,

I suppose with the mileage we do its never going to be in the mid 30's , but once serviced and with good pipes on it I an hoping for 28-30Mpg..
Does this sound realistic???

P.S its an Td4 auto as well..:(

I think a Synergy 2 with MAFF is the way to go but as I have only just got her I am making sure all the bits that need doing are done first,,then we will see..;)
 
on mine I brimmed it and I got about 430 miles when the red light came on but stupidly did not brim it again to check wil do it next time. Oh and those chip express well i tried one on my old car and all they do it to put more fuel through ruined a couple of turbo pipes as there was to much fuel going through .will never use one again

28 to 30 mpg is perfectly reasonable and should be easily attainable.

My 5 mile journey to work was always a pain due to traffic lights etc. -if you have an uninteruppted run you should do better than I did.

I imagine you've spotted all the tweaks to make the thing more efficient.

And after all that, as you say, comes the Synergy2a+

My Freelander is subjected to extremes - 3 months of short journeys in rural Scotland and then a 2500 mile in 4 days blast to the SW corner of Europe where it's basically off-roading up mountains etc. for a month. Then it's back to the UK where the whole cycle starts again. On those really long motorway journeys I can get 43 mpg or better despite being a tad overloaded :rolleyes: and with a heavy 100kg roof-box, running at around 80 - 85mph where possible.

Unfortunately I have 9 sets of light and 2 very busy roundabouts to get passed on the journey,
that works out if I stop at them all 1 stop every 1/2 a mile,,
I do this at 7:30am & 4pm and the wife does exactly the same journey
9:15pm & 6am, so I suppose she has the best run with little traffic, so it just depends on the lights being nice or not,,

I have all the below on a list,,

PVC upgrade to BMW cyclone gizmo (on the table as we speak, ready to do at the weekend)
EGR by-pass, (in the post hopefully this weekend if not it will be next weekend)
Decent quality air-cleaner (I am the sad Muppet getting the performance one,Remember me :D)
(At the sorting office will be in this weekend)

28psi tyre pressures (On the way home from work tomorrow 215/65/16)
5w-30 engine oil (On the list when the rest is all in place)

No, No - no sad Muppets here - we're all students at the same 'School of Freelander Learning' - just some of us have been attending classes a little longer than others. :p

Sorry I can't reliably say where your fuel filter will be as my early 2002 had it in the engine bay and my late 2004 has it under the off-side rear wheel arch. Depends on the exact build date.

If you turn on the ignition but not actually start the engine you should be able to hear the pump running for 30 seconds or so. If the sound comes from the rear wheel arch then the fuel filter is in the same housing as the pump. Not a clever place to put a service item. :(

PCV new - again std replacement
Solenoid filter new
Using Redex
Using 2 stroke oil
Tyre pressures at 30psi

Now it's 27/28 mixed driving. Town/country/motorway a little bit of towing.

33mpg mainly motorway and A roads. Little bit of town.

Unless anyone says anything else I reckon that's about it. Best I can do with a TD4 Auto.
