Hi people i know im new here and it looks bad asking for help so early on in membership but ive only had my rangie a week and today it has had a meltdown and i dont know where to start to be fair, could anyone help me look in the right direction please...

ok its a 1999 50k miles HSE 4.6 and has been fine al be it a few little odd jobs needing doing but today my world fell apart :baby: what happend then....

I was driving down the road no issues at all, and for some unknown reason the horn just started blasting away, so i stopped turned engine off and at all stopped re turned ignition back on blasting horn again, So i took the fuse out and the horns stopped but i noticed the headlights were on main beam with the light switch in the off position, and also the hazzards warning lights were flashing, i thought it was the fuse being out so i refitted it and took the horn wires off but it was still the same,So to get home i had to take all 6 indicator bulbs out and drive home with just main beam light blaring, but i got home...

i did also try taking the battery off which has made no difference and only lost my radio code, but the warnings on the dash are going mental.. fuse 6 blown, fuse 17 blown non are actually blown, and reset windows, reset sunroof, reset this and that its mental...you dont have any ideas do you Doug by an chance...im gutted mate....only had it a week today...

Hope some of you landy / range rover guru's can help to be honest...

Thanking anyone in advance if you can help or show me where to look anything to be honest im lost off...

check the video guys

thanks guys Rob

I'm no expert on the P38, but (to start the ball rolling until someone who knows what he's talking about comes along) from what I've read it could be low battery voltages upsetting the BECM or the main fusebox on its way out (sniff it for burning smells).

Hope that helps a bit and you get it sorted soon.

Pete

PS. put your location in your profile and you may be lucky enough to get someone local to help you.

You've caused the "reset windows and sunroof" warnings by disconnecting the battery. Simply run each window all the way down, hold for a second then back up and hold for a second and you'll cancel these.

The horn, headlights and indicators are all operated through the steering wheel and stalk so I'd start investigating there.

The "blown fuses" that aren't are often caused by either a low battery, faulty alternator or a failing under-bonnet fuse box. A smell of burning or scorch marks around the relay sockets is a good indicator.

As Pete said, get your location in, somebody local may be willing to help.

+1 for fuse box.

Also check the BeCM for moisture, if your heater o rings are leaking into footwell it will cause condensation to form in the BeCM causing issues.

Most common is a dodgy fuse box, or duff battery.

I'd say fusebox as well. 50k miles probably is just as detrimental. If its not been in dry storage for the time it wasnt used then likelyhood is corrosion on electrical contacts. Especially if its been damp and cold in the vehicle.

It's going to be a minefield for you unfortunately as it could be the smallest bit of corrosion on a chip leg, wire connection or connection joint. I would start at the fusebox, repair/replace as necessary then look at BeCM module under driver seat.

Is it genuine 50K? because the dash unit/BeCM could have been replaced it may have reset mileages. I cant remember which resets which.

Mileage resets to whichever is the higher figure beit BeCM or Instrument Panel.

In theory yes aslong as they were both brand new - but you'd have to set the BeCM up to the car settings and type etc...

looks like yove got a eas fault too as both the access and highway lights are on
That could just be because it is inbetween access and standard, and he has the door open freezing it - but saying that the selected height should be flashing....

With all those faults I am not surprised it is showing and EAS fault too...!!

Watching the vid, I am becoming more suspcious of the BeCM, fuse box or duff battery.....in that order!

Disconnect battery, disconnect BeCM, clean all connections, take the case apart and check for signs of corrosion, moisture, tracking etc....put back together, charge battery, reconnect and see what happens.....

Different car (smart brabus roadster) but had exactly the same thing.

Water had got into the SAM module (BeCM equivalent) body control module.

First time it happened RAC hard reset it by d/c the battery for 1 hour and then reconnecting it - called it hard reset like switching a pc off at the mains and dumping any memory. next day got in and dash board lit up like a christmas tree with all lights on without the key even in the ignition.

Turned out after opening the SAM water had got into the connections (tiniest amount prob condensation from heater in foot well) and had corroded pins and terminals on the PCB.

Suggest you have a similar problem in the fuse box. Well documented on here and Range rovers.net with bodge fixes available.

Also check the condition of your battery. The battery can really upset the BeCM ( and each BeCM will throw up different faults) if below 12.6ish. Then check your alternator output, should be charging at 14.4 under 2000 rpm load. Again well documented on here.

Hi guys still not found the fault looks like its going to auto electricains to be fair ive charged the battery and its quite a new one from the history (halfords 072 520 amps)
will check charge rate tomorrow.....

Even if you turn the side lights on without the keys in i get all the faults up, horn, hazzards, headlights on high beam, all the fault warnings buzzing warnings galore.. the carpet was valeted last week but seems dry enough like..

Mileadge i think is correct mind, full history to 43k at landrover but mots take over at 39k in 2006 and confirm 3/4k per annum from there onwards....but you never know do you to be fair...

Aero fabrique, saintV8 yeah i will check the stuff you have suggested tomorrow and see if i can turn anything up, before this fault nothing was coming up the suspnsion works great and is very quick in operation their was no errors on dash or lights staying on just the abs/tc/handbrake is it till i got to 5mph or so and they went out take it thats normal....

As above from both myself and Aero - Sounds like the BeCM.....pop it out and take a goosey inside, could just be moisture as suggested....saves the bill for an auto electrician who will only look at your rangie and scratch their heads, mumble something incoherent and charge you for it!! unless the sparky knows the P38 and its BeCM inside out, you could be on to a loser and a big bill!

i as it happens had the hazzards fault on a audi A4 tdi avant a few years back and that was the body control module too. £300 part it was as well.. range rover ones are they still available ????
