Hi there,

Bought my disco a few days back and wanna change the oil as i dont know when it was last done, couldnt afford the 40 notes that halfords wanted off me so i bought some diesel oil from wilkos(you know.....the cheap **** scroat shop !!!)
Anyway, the way i see it oil is oil in an old 94 200tdi and cheap oil has to be better than old ****ty oil wouldnt you say.
The oil i bought is just a wilkos own brand, synthetically fortified 15w40 for diesel and turbocharged engines.
Someone let me know quickly cause i wanna get out and change the oil before it ****es down with rain.
Cheers for any help or advice that may come my way.
See ya

hi sniffpipes
all i can say is you pays your money you takes your choice i personally think it will be ok as long as it has the usual I.S.O. gradings on the container but thats my opinion.I have always used lesser known brands and changed my oil every 6k Got to be better than a couple of quid of a car boot that i have seen fellas buy.
all the best mate;)

Don't use cheap oil!

Good quality oil, changed regularly is the best preventative maintenance you can give any engine. If it means waiting another week or so to buy good quality oil of the correct grade then wait.

If on the side of the container it states the different manufactureres standards have been met or exceeded then use it. Most oils for sale in the UK come from the same blending plant in Stoke on Trent, they blend the olis for all the major oil companies and most of the independants all from the same tanks and to the same standard but greatly inflated prices are charged by the major companies to recoup there marketing/advertising fees. I myself buy Comma 10/40 semi synthetic oil in bulk (for customers or my own vehicles) and have never suffered any engine oil related problems in the last 28 years (not since Duckhams had to replace one of my Rally engines).

Sniffpies, after working on tankers for 15 years and knowing what happens to produce "cheap oil" personally I would only use that stuff to oil the hinges on me gate. I only put mobil1 in the disco cos I get it cheap as I used to sub for Castrol.

Since changing my oil a couple of months ago in mine, I used a slightly better quality than before, I am sure the engine is running much better and faster. Woth spending the money.

It has fook all to do with how much you pay, its the spec that counts or we would all be running on Mobil 1 !!!!

check your handbook that came with the car, there will be a spec for the oil in there, something like API A3 or similar, as long as the oil you bought is up to that spec you will be fine because you will be meeting the manufacturers spec.

As for your idea that its got to be better than ****e old oil, as long as its up to the spec in the book.... yeah you are absolutely correct.

Semi synth is far better than mineral

That oil will be great. Just the very job.
People like me use tractor universal engine oil in ALL our cars and Landies, including a TD5 Discovery. These are super quality oils and you need have no fears.

I buy mine in 210 litre drums. Less than £1 a litre, so it doesn't bust the bank to change it once in a while.
