Yesterday i went to start my v8 1996 disco1 which i bought around 3 months ago and is used regularly and as i started her up i got a horrific crunching sound from the bottom half of the engine. but she still started straight away. i turned her of straight way and then tried again. this time there was nothing but the whirling of the started but sounded like a busted solenoid. today i stripped of the starter to have a look inside.

I removed all the shrapnel that i could find and managed to get a new started from a local land rover restorer. lucky for me there was no damage to anything else. looked up on line earlier and it seams it was some sort of cheep chines aftermarket part. so be aware when you look at aftermarket parts.

U need to get all the bits out as they can cause loads of further damage if left. I'd suggest gearbox and transfer off b4 starting again

So much comes from reputable Chinese and Japanese companies that it is sometimes difficult to separate the good from the bad.

Denso make starters and alternators for world-wide usage, nobody would say they are a 'bad' maker, yet many people rubbish them as though they are a 'cheap and nasty' manufacturer.

Many European companies have Chinese manufacturing facilities, and there are also European makers with slightly 'naff' reputations.

TD5's have a Denso starter, my V8 has a Bosch starter but it can be Valeo, who also make the BCU and other parts for the Discovery.
