Your wife has made my day! It was youself who initially suggested to me that this was the only way to go so I took the advice and, when I saw those pictures I was very grateful I did! The only advisory on the vehicle MOT was 'slight corrosion on the rear chassis'!!!!!!!
It was in November, when my mechanic was changing my wheels/tyres over (for the winter) I asked if I could have a look under it. I was horrified with what I saw and that was only the hole that is seen in one of the pictures! I'm glad I didn't see the full extent or I would never have slept peacefully in my bed!

Hi DD, well at least you can sleep peacefully now. I take it that the work is all finished now? So how does she feel? Was it a Richards galvy chassis you had fitted.

And one final question if I may, did you find lots of other things that needed doing and added to the costs, whilst this work was going on?

No, it is not ready yet - the pictures were up-to-date for yesterday but I hope it is going to be ready, fully MOT'd for me on Thursday. I can't wait. I will let you know what it feels like after I've tried it.

Yes, It is a Richards chassis and I had to wait a few weeks after ordering it before delivery. - Well worth the wait.

As for extras. I can't say everything it needed until I pick him up and pay the bill!! I was expecting to replace ALL the ace pipes but I understand that only the rear ones were needed. The brake pipes are being replaced and I have been told that the power steering pipes needed replacing as well as the rear ride height sensors. I had the clutch done about 30k miles ago and I have no reason to believe the gear box was giving any trouble. The mechanic did emphasize the sense of doing any necessary work whilst he had it in bits si to make it easier for both of us, I gave him a set amount to go up to before contacting me for more!!!! As I haven't heard from him asking for more, I assume he is still spending up to my set limit.

As the owner, driver but total moron when it comes to vehicle mechanics ( I just love Land Rovers), I just wanted him to do everything necessary to keep my beloved Disco running well. I'll let you know the full cost and the things done as soon as I get to know.

I am! And each day seems to be longer than the last - just like a kid waiting for Christmas. A bit sad when you consider I have now reached the normally expected life span for a human!!!!!

Well I got Euphorbie4 returned to me last evening and I have spent this morning 'trying it out'. I can't believe the difference, I feel as if I've died and gone to heaven!!!! It really is like driving a new car. It is perhaps the only repair bill that I have enjoyed spending money on.

When I saw the state of the old chassis which had been described on the MOT ( 8,000 miles previous) as 'slight corrosion' I was horrified to see the true state of it. I think I was very lucky not to have had it collapse on me when I was driving along. The front part was not too bad.

If anyone else is considering a d2 chassis change or any other major work, I can't recommend Chris Bowler at Cambrian 4x4 farm too highly. I have no connection to him whatsoever but his work was recommended to me by the mechanic who looks after my car who had heard nothing but good comments about his work - great guy!

Replacement parts - ACE, brake pipes, power steering pipes,fluids all round, bits and bolts etc. etc. £2000 max. Could have been cheaper bu I wanted the ACE replacing as it was.

VAT included.

Yes, it needs a very full piggy bank but if you saw how bad it was ........

Ooh very suprised as the chassis is 2.5k on ebay.i was waiting for you to say 6k.did Cambrian 4x4 supp;y the chassis or did you purchase elsewhere.think my caravan fund going elsewhere.

Seems mental that my >40 year old land rovers have better chassis than a 12 year old disco. I have a disco 2 as well and now I'm scared to poke about the chassis!

Great thread, I have 2004 and its showing signs of rot at back end was hoping to treat it with dinitrol then it would last few extra years what do you think

I'd love to do this myself, cleaning up all the bits as I went. Stripped and rebuilt a classic mini and it was great fun, need to figure out how to lift the body high enough to clear the chassis............

Well, how about taking all the doors off, 4 blokes to lift the shell over the chassis??? wonder what the body in this state would weigh?

When they do a chassis swap over here, they call upon a local farmer with a long-reach fork lift and use that to lift the body away from the chassis.
