Hey, I am planning on changing my timing belt on my 300 tdi disco as the only evidence I can find of it ever being changed was 90000 miles/10 years ago.... And this scares me! I've got the new belt ect but want to check a few things out before I have a go at it as I like to have a good read on things before trying it.... Will the bolt on the crank pulley come off with an air impact driver?

Any other tips that could help are appreciated guys. Thanks!

Almost certainly yes!

Mine didn't:rolleyes:

Had to put a socket with a breaker bar on it so it rested on the chassis then flicked the starter.
Came off then:D

I am doing mine tomorrow, I’m very nervous about it for some reason?
I have the correct kit of pins and pullers for locking the timing etc, plus of course the full belt kit inc new oil seals etc.

The only thing I don’t have is a beam type torque wrench for setting the tension, so I have to get around that somehow? I have a normal torque wrench. On other vehicles I have relied on the 90 degree twist method of tension.

Hopefully I will be a very happy chappy tomorrow eve?

If you have done belts before then rely on your own judgement and experience for tension, its not difficult :)

I will be attempting mine at the end of march when I have some holidays booked from work as a just in caser. I think the part I brought was just the belt, what other bits should I be replacing?

ok, i have planned to do this for a while now and tensioning the belt seems to be the scariest part i think...

I planned on doing this next week but driving earlier i kept hearing a slight squealing sound coming from the engine when i rev so tomorrow first thing i will start it!

I have a click torque wrench that when i get to the desired setting it clicks, ive heard that these arnt good to use.

any final hints n tips or pics would be great people. thanks

you can use a torque wrench ok ,dont forget to then rotate engine twice and reset tension

pump with pin or 9.5mm drill bit, crank at rear but dont fit pin till key is at 12oclock at the front theres often more than one slot ,cam you look through rad to align marks or a mirrror

Tensioner, idler, oil seals etc. like in this kit, plus crankshaft seal.

TIMINGKIT300L | Timing Belt Kit - 300TDI later type

You'll need timing pins or similar, to lock the flywheel and the injection pump pulley. You'll almost certainly need some kind of puller to remove the crankshaft belt timing pulley so you can fit the new seal.

The job is made much easier if you remove the radiator and front grill.

Good luck, it's much easier to do than it sounds,

Dave

Ok guys, i have got as far as getting to the timng belt! woo!

I have put the 9.5m drill bit in the pump hole..

I got the woodruff key to TDC then climbed under the disco at the back and looked into the crank casing??.....

the line that i can see is not exactly in the middle.... I am going to buy a new aux belt now so i will also get a locking pin for that also, do i go with the woodruff key or do i go with the cam lock underneath... orrrrr is there a way i could get both of these bang on?

I havnt undone the belt tensioner yet.

I was lucky with the crank pulley.. i had ordered a pulley removal tool and it hasnt arrived so i gave it a bit yank with my 17 stone self and it came off!

any more advise guys would be appreciated.
