Ok thanks, the new IRD is in and everything is in place.

I now need to put the new VCU. I got a second hand one with 5000 K from 2019 says the guy who sold it to me, it looks good, but I will need to do the 'test with the Wheel up' thing to be sure
They are SO expensive new, specially with the Brexit taxes

Anyway, the bearing on the new one is making a noise and the bearings are supposed to be new. I noticed that they are different from my old VCU. On the old one the rotating part is on the outside, and its on the inside in the new one

Ok so I put the VCU back in the car and the noise is TERRIBLE

I need to find good quality bearings

Can anyone tell me which are the most quiet ?

The recommendation is to use original FAG support bearings.

These are expensive at £100+ per pair (a lot of money for what they are!).

You can get other brands for a fraction of that price, but its a gamble as to whether they will be any good.

It looks like Bell Engineering sell FAG supports for £109 (excl VAT)...

It looks like they may at times sell support bearings that have had the actual FAG bearing inserted into them for £50...

This would be a good option as the carriers presumably don't fail, it is the bearing. It doesn't look like they currently have any for sale. Might be worth contacting them though.

Dunno if anyone has any experience of replacing the bearing within the carrier and what the part number is for just the bearing.
 
It should also be asked whether you have aligned the VCU and bearings correctly. The VCU should be installed lined up front to back in the vehicle. It should not be installed so that the props form a straight line. Going by the original markings is advisable.

I've done it a few times, but I can't remember the bearing number off the top of my head. From memory the inner diameter is 32mm, and outer may be 60mm (I'm not 100% on that), but the bearings are definitely available separately, and not expensive either. One thing to note is the rubber between the carrier housing and bearing housing can deteriorate and collapse, which renders the whole assembly scrap.

But with 128.000 Kms and the water cooling MOD installed by the previous owner, I should be good (?)

Well done for sticking with it. Anything can be done if you stay patient and think what you are doing !







The head gasket depends on if it has been done properly before. I had a 120k miler. Gasket had been done by a PO at 50k. Gasket went at 130k !! PO had used wrong gasket type, washers under stretched head bolts etc ...

Not difficult if it goes, just catch it Quick !!

A coolant level sensor is good, see my recent thread.
